The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government. Physical Oceanographer (m/f/d)
Background
The section Physical Oceanography of the Polar Seas invites applications for the position of a Physical Oceanographer (m/f/d) in the framework of the HGF infrastructure Program “FRontiers in Arctic marine Monitoring: The FRAM Ocean Observing System”. The position addresses the management and scientific integration of data from this and related programs.

The FRAM ocean observing system is a marine infrastructure to enable year-round time series observations in the Arctic Ocean and the Nordic Seas. FRAM contributes to international efforts towards comprehensive global Earth observations. The main purpose of the FRAM infrastructure is permanent presence at sea, covering the ocean from the sea surface to the sea floor, for the provision of near real-time data for the study of ocean dynamics, climate variability and ecosystem change. The infrastructure will provide ocean data from a range of measurements platforms and sensors that will be made available to a multitude of users.


Tasks
You will

  *   manage the mooring and hydrography program of FRAM with a particular focus on the mooring array that has been monitoring the inflow conditions to the Arctic Ocean in the West Spitsbergen Current in the eastern part of Fram Strait since 1997.
  *   improve the measurement strategy according to the scientific questions of the FRAM users.
  *   join expeditions and will be responsible for the acquisition and high quality processing of mooring data.
  *   both compute derived quantities (e.g. self-consistent volume transport time-series of the flow in the WSC from 1997 to 2018) from the mooring data and publish those as derived data products.
  *   conduct scientific analyses based on this data set and publish them in the scientific literature.
  *   work in close cooperation with FRAM scientists ranging from physical oceanographers to modelers and marine biologists as well as with engineers and technicians.


Requirements

  *   Master degree in physical oceanography or related fields
  *   An extensive experience in both the operation of marine equipment (particularly in high-latitude and ice-covered oceans) and the analysis of sensor-based environmental (preferably marine) data.
  *   Strong background in high-level programming (preferably MATLAB) is required.
  *   Willingness to participate in research expeditions.
  *   Very good communication skills in English - both written and oral – are mandatory.

Desirable skills and knowledge

  *   You should have practical knowledge in the application of statistical methods to be used for the analyses of time series and spatial patterns is desirable.
  *   You should be open to interact with an interdisciplinary and international science community.

The full-time position is limited to 21 months. The salary will be paid in accordance with the German Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes (TVöD Bund), up to salary level 13. The place of employment will be Bremerhaven.
