HBOI Research Coordinator Geochemical Sensing

Position Summary:
Florida Atlantic University is seeking a motivated Coordinator, Research Programs & Services for the Harbor Branch Campus in Fort Pierce, FL. The Coordinator will work closely with Dr. Jordon Beckler, other members of the Geochemistry and Geochemical Sensing Lab, and members from several other labs conducting related work. This is an exciting opportunity to be involved with virtually every aspect of federally-sponsored research.
The Geochemical Sensing Lab is one of the newest programs at FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and is co-sponsored by the FAU Institute for Sensing and Embedded Network and Systems Engineering (I-SENSE). The lab develops in situ techniques and instrumentation to monitor elemental concentrations and fluxes over space and time in aquatic environments such as oceans, estuaries, rivers, lakes, groundwater, and most recently, frozen ice. Tools include electrochemical, fluidic, and optical sensors for the measurement of nutrients, trace metals, carbon, and sulfur, but also the platforms used to employ these sensors, such as moorings, seafloor benthic landers, and autonomous underwater and surface vehicles. Research applications include constraining elemental biogeochemical budgets, water quality monitoring (e.g. nutrient budgets, harmful algal blooms, hypoxia, and sulfidization), sediment and soil resilience (e.g. mobilization of trace metals and seagrass site suitability), and ocean exploration (submarine sink “blueholes” and deep-sea sediment systems).
Summary of Responsibilities:
· Manage the day-to-day administrative tasks associated with the lab, including maintaining inventories of supplies and chemicals, preparing SOPs, ensuring instruments are calibrated, routine maintenance, and researching, purchasing, or designing supplies and equipment.
· Ensure all collected data is compliant and entered into the lab database.
· Assist with proposal preparation, including budgeting, literature research, and writing.
· Routinely coordinate and prepare for field trips to collect water, sediment, and soil samples as part of the Florida Center for Coastal and Human Health to better understand the geochemical factors that lead to poor environmental and human health in the Indian River Lagoon, such as hypoxia and harmful algal blooms.
· Routinely coordinate and conduct chemical analyses on water, soil, and sediment samples, including a combination of dissolved and solid phase nutrients, trace metals, and algal cysts. Instrumentation may include spectrophotometers, a Shimadzu Total Organic Carbon analyzer, HPLC, electrochemical analyzers, and ICP-OES.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Chemistry, Chemistry, Oceanography, or related area of specialization with two years appropriate experience required.

Master's degree from an accredited institution in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Chemistry, Chemistry, Oceanography, or related area of specialization and relevant experience with water/sediment/soil quality analysis preferred.

Knowledge of chemistry and biology laboratory principles, practices, procedures, equipment and materials, laboratory safety and hazard communication required.

Knowledge of proper labeling, use, storage and disposal of chemicals required.

Must be a motivated, organized, self-starter, capable of working independently as well as in a team environment.

Ability to collect samples and maintain their integrity and validity required.

Ability to perform laboratory analyses according to SOPs and make comparisons and inferences from data required.

Experience with problem solving/instrument troubleshooting preferred.

Ability to evaluate situations that depart from expected behavior or results and initiate corrective actions preferred.

Ability to read and interpret technical and operational manuals, guidelines and diagrams preferred.

May require some weekend and/or evening work in addition to regular work hours, as well as periodic travel up to one-week.

A valid driver's license is required.
