Postdoctoral Research Associate - Multiscale Modeling of Stream Hyporheic-Zone Processes

Date: Jul 2, 2019

Location: Oak Ridge, TN, US, 37831

Company: Oak Ridge National Laboratory

Requisition Id 1500

Purpose:
The Environmental Sciences Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is an interdisciplinary research and development organization with more than 60 years of achievement in local, national, and international environmental research. Our vision is to advance scientific knowledge and develop innovative strategies and technologies that strengthen the nation's capacity to find solutions that help sustain the Earth's natural resources. We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join a multidisciplinary team developing and evaluating novel multiscale models for reactive transport in stream corridors.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:
You will contribute to the development of models for nutrient and contaminant dynamics in low-order streams, taking into account rate-limited mass transfer between the flowing streams and biogeochemically active transient storage zones. Working as part of a team, you will implement those models in advanced community software running on high-performance computing resources. A significant focus will be on comparing the models to column and flume experiments and to stream tracer tests in low-order streams. Scaling of hyporheic exchange and biogeochemical processes to watersheds and river basins is also of interest. The work will be part of a multidisciplinary team studying the transport and transformation of nutrients and contaminants in stream systems.

Required Qualifications:
A Ph.D. in hydrology, environmental sciences, geosciences, environmental or chemical engineering or a related field is required.
Experience and demonstrated productivity with numerical models of complex phenomena in C/C++ or Fortran is required.
Basic understanding of mass transfer processes in the stream corridors, working knowledge of geochemical speciation software, and experience with multicomponent reactive transport modeling would be a distinct advantage, as would past experience with high-performance computing environments.
The successful candidate must work independently and collaboratively as part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team.

Applicants must have received their most recent degree less than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
