*Postdoctoral opportunity in sediment sulfur biogeochemistry, Large Lakes
Observatory, University of Minnesota Duluth*
We seek a postdoctoral researcher to investigate the biogeochemical
pathways of organic sulfur in low-sulfate aquatic sediments, in the
framework of a NSF-funded project (
https://www.nsf.gov/awardsearch/showAward?AWD_ID=1754061). A successful
candidate will join an interdisciplinary team of geochemists,
geomicrobiologists, and modelers to investigate how, under conditions of
scarce inorganic sulfur, mineralization of organic sulfur contributes to
diagenetic reactions, generates reactive sulfur intermediates, and supports
microbial communities. We seek an experimental scientist with strong
proficiency in analytical techniques and interest in applying geochemical
knowledge to solving fundamental problems. Experimental work will include
offshore fieldwork on the Great Lakes and laboratory studies. Applicants
should have a demonstrated record of conducting research in a relevant
field, and an excellent record of scholarly publications. They would be
expected to conduct independent research, assist with lab and field
coordination activities, and participate in supervision of graduate
students. Preference will be given to candidates who have excellent written
communication skills, experience in limnological or oceanographic work,
experience in sediment geochemistry, especially in the cycling of sulfur,
or experience in numerical modeling.
The position is to begin between June and October 2019, for a term of 18
months. Salary up to $49,000/year will be commensurate with qualifications.
The Large Lakes Observatory, located on the Duluth campus of the University
of Minnesota, is an interdisciplinary research department dedicated to
oceanographic studies of large lakes worldwide and offers excellent
professional development opportunities.
Applications must be submitted online. A full description of the position
is available at https://hr.myu.umn.edu/jobs/ext/328994. To request more
information contact Dr. Sergei Katsev (skatsev at d.umn.edu) or Dr. Kathryn
Schreiner (kschrein at d.umn.edu). Please submit the application with cover
letter, CV, statement of research interests, and names of three references.
The search will continue until the position is filled.
