2020 Stanback Fellow - New York Oceans Team

Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective
environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of
3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife
and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living
things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of
America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and
many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a
major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our
staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and
communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York,
Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana, and
Beijing.

Position Summary:

This position is only for current Duke students.

We can safeguard Earth's biodiversity and reinforce our defenses against
climate change by protecting at least 30 percent of ecologically important
land and ocean areas by 2030 ("30X30"). NRDC's Oceans Team and our allies
are developing the foundation of public support, political will, and the
policy tools needed to ensure 30X30 and are seeking a Stanback Program
fellow interested in helping us advance significant U.S. ocean habitat
protections as part of this global effort. The position entails research of
potential candidate areas for further ocean protections and assistance in
the development of materials highlighting the value of these places to the
public and decision-makers. The fellow will also participate in development
of a network of respected thought leaders able to call for a U.S. commitment
to 30X30.

Responsibilities

As time permits, the fellow may also assist Oceans Team staff with research,
comments, and letters on a wide range of issues from defending our coasts
from oil and gas exploration, developing best environmental practices for
offshore wind, and protecting important marine mammal species and habitats
around the world. The fellow will work out of the New York office. NRDC
encourages summer fellows to attend all subject matter relevant meetings and
events.

Skills fellow will gain:

*	Relationships with NRDC program staff and subject matter experts.
*	Experience with policy analysis and advocacy.
*	Increased understanding of pressing ocean issues.
