Application Deadline: This position will be posted until January 13th.

Relocation: Relocation is available for this position.

Work Authorization: UCAR|NCAR will sponsor a work visa for this position.

Where You Will Work:

JCSDA is a multi-agency research center to improve the use of satellite data
for analyzing and predicting the weather, the ocean, the climate and the
environment.

What You Will Do:

This position is under the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation
(JCSDA) and provides partial support for the Joint Effort for Data
assimilation Integration (JEDI). The JEDI project is an inter-agency effort
aimed at developing a unified community Data Assimilation (DA) system
providing initial conditions for research and operational models in Earth
system prediction across JCSDA partner agencies (NASA, NOAA, DoD).

The Associate Scientist will be in charge of developing tools for
diagnostics of the JEDI data assimilation system. These tools will include
diagnostics about the use of observations in data assimilation, but also
about other aspects that might inform the development and future evolution
of the data assimilation system for atmosphere and ocean applications and
for coupled systems in the future. The Associate Scientist will be
responsible for the design, clarity and readability of displayed
diagnostics.

The Associate Scientist will regularly evaluate the performance of the JEDI
system and provide feedback to the JEDI development team and JCSDA partners.

Responsibilities:

Develop and validate community tools for computing and displaying
diagnostics for the JEDI data assimilation system, in collaboration with
scientists and software engineers of the JEDI project team and JCSDA partner
agencies.

Regularly evaluate and monitor the performance of the JEDI data assimilation
system, in collaboration with scientists at JCSDA and JCSDA partner
agencies.

Write and present scientific papers and documentation material in
conferences, workshops, tutorials and educational events to the JCSDA
partners and the scientific data assimilation community.

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:

. Level II: Bachelor's degree in a relevant science, and at least two
years of experience as an Associate Scientist I (or equivalent position) in
the scientific field of specialization. Or additional education (as in a
program leading to a Master's degree).

. Level III: Bachelor's degree in a relevant science, and at least
three years of experience as an Associate Scientist II (or equivalent
position) in the scientific field of specialization.

. Level IV: Bachelor's degree in a relevant science, at least five
years of experience as an Associate Scientist III (or equivalent position)
in the scientific field of specialization.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

For a Level II/III:

. This is a project scientist position requiring previous experience
in data assimilation. A very strong programming experience is also required
as well as very good communication skills and ability to present results
clearly.

. Excellent graphical skills and ability to communicate results
clearly

. Very good programming skills: software design, object-oriented
programming, Python, C++

. Knowledge of modern software engineering practices (source code
management, continuous integration, issue tracking)

. Very good English language communication skills, ability to
communicate with software engineers and scientists

. Ability to work well within a diverse and multidisciplinary team

. Knowledge of operational-grade data assimilation techniques and
systems for level III

For a Level IV, in addition to Level II/III Requirements:

. Experience with operational data assimilation and/or forecasting
systems, or evaluation of such systems, for level IV.

Desired, but not Required:

. Good knowledge of operational data assimilation techniques and
systems

. Good understanding of the use of observations in data assimilation

Applicant Notes:

. Please note that while the position description details both
minimum requirements as well as desired skills and experience, we want to
remind applicants that you do not need to have all the desired skills and
experience to be considered for this role. If you have the passion for the
