The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Indiana University (IU) Bloomington invites applicants for a postdoctoral research associate in mesoscale-microscale weather model coupling for wind-energy purposes. This work will be performed in collaboration with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).

The emphasis of this position is on coupling the wind-plant and atmospheric-boundary-layer scale flow (microscale) with the regional-scale weather (mesoscale). This coupling between the mesoscale and microscale is important because it greatly expands the range of conditions of wind-plant flows that we can simulate. Large-eddy simulation is used to compute the microscale flows and numerical weather prediction codes are used to compute the mesoscale flows. In this work, we are particularly interested in i) offshore mesoscale-microscale coupling to capture effects within the wind plant including coastal low-level jets, sea breezes, and frontal passages and ii) mesoscale-microscale coupling applied to wind-plant simulation cases. Examples of research projects include, but are not limited to, devising methods to simulate sea breeze flows and/or coastal low-level jets and examining ways to simulate multiple days to a full week of conditions on the U.S. eastern seaboard.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in atmospheric science, physics, engineering, or a related field prior to employment. Basic qualifications include:
• expertise in computational fluid dynamics, numerical weather prediction, or turbulence modeling in the atmospheric boundary layer,
• the ability to work independently and collaboratively with other researchers,
• written and oral communication skills, including publishing research findings in scholarly journals and oral presentations at conferences,
• experience with developing, modifying, and running modern computer codes on parallel, high-performance computing systems.
Desired qualifications also include:
• a general understanding of mesoscale meteorology,
• experience with large-eddy simulation,
• the ability to code in object-oriented C++ and Python,
• knowledge of modern computer code development practices, such as version control using git.

To apply, please visit the following webpage: http://indiana.peopleadmin.com/postings/8957
You will need to submit a cover letter, CV, statement of research, and contact information for 3 references. We will begin to review applications on December 31, but the position will remain open until filled.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
