The Glacier Modeling Lab at the University at Buffalo, NY invites applications for PhD and MS students to begin exciting new research projects in Fall 2020. There are two primary opportunities:
1. Constrain the future fates of meltwater generated on the Greenland Ice Sheet. To achieve this, the student will implement desktop-computer-scale numeric models of ice flow and apply them to glacier environments around Greenland. Student work on this NASA-funded project will make an important contribution toward forecasting future rates of sea-level rise from the Greenland Ice Sheet.
2. Investigate the effects of climate change on ice melt, the subglacial water system, and glacier flow in East Greenland by identifying patterns of water drainage from near-surface englacial aquifers into crevasses. The student will get to use on-campus supercomputing to analyze NASA data and identify the patterns of subsurface water movement. Progress on this project will constrain the role that a newly discovered hidden water environment may play in ice sheet mass balance.
Following strong traditions in the UB Department of Geology, the graduate students will have opportunities to present research results at conferences and will be encouraged to publish findings in peer-reviewed academic journals. The students will benefit from collaboration within our Climate and Paleoclimate research group, with our Hydrology, Environmental, and Geophysics research groups, with researchers at the UB Center for Computational Research (CCR), and with students in the new Computational Earth Sciences program.
All research projects involve quantitative analysis in Matlab and/or Python. Previous coding experience is a plus, but not required. Enthusiastic students with a BS or MS degree in earth science, physics, mathematics, environmental science, geophysics, or a related field, and an interest in climate science, glaciology, and/or quantitative work are encouraged to apply.
Buffalo is the City of Good Neighbors – a historic city with a hometown feel. World-class art and music venues, parks designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, major and minor league sports teams, and a multicultural community make Buffalo a great place to study, work, and live.
Interested students are encouraged to contact Kristin Poinar at kpoinar at buffalo.edu<mailto:kpoinar at buffalo.edu> and should formally apply to the UB Geology graduate program this month. Full information on the graduate program is available at arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/geology/graduate/admissions.html<https://arts-sciences.buffalo.edu/geology/graduate/admissions.html> and information on the Glacier Modeling Lab is atubwp.buffalo.edu/glaciermodelinglab<https://ubwp.buffalo.edu/glaciermodelinglab>.
