Assistant Professor in Isotope Biogeochemistry

The Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) at the University of Colorado invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in isotope biogeochemistry, with an anticipated start date of August 2020. The successful candidate will join a team in INSTAAR's Stable Isotope Laboratory (SIL, https://instaar.colorado.edu/research/labs-groups/stable-isotope-laboratory/) and complement isotopic and environmental research expertise across the CU campus.

The new assistant professor would be rostered in the Research & Innovation Office (RIO) and would become a tenure-track professor in one of INSTAAR's affiliated academic departments and programs that best suits their training and interests. These departments include Geological Sciences; Geography; Ecology and Evolutionary Biology; Environmental Studies, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, and Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering. INSTAAR's SIL has strong ties to both carbon-cycle research conducted by NOAA and international ice core research programs.

A strong commitment to teaching, and mentorship at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to outreach activities, is expected. The candidate is expected to engage in development of coursework in his or her area of research expertise, and to contribute to the teaching needs of the host department.

Our traditional focus has been on polar and alpine regions, where effects of global change are especially pronounced. In recent decades, our research has broadened to include environmental challenges that span local, regional, and global scales. Research topics vary widely and include Quaternary and modern environments, human and ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, landscape evolution, hydrology, oceanography, and climate.

INSTAAR's research activities integrate field studies, state-of-the-art laboratory experiments, sample analysis, and numerical and laboratory modeling. Our field sites are located across all seven continents and the world's oceans.

Our expertise across disciplines helps us generate influential science that can inform public and policy decisions and move us toward a more sustainable society.   *   Lead novel research activities and
  *   Innovate growth of SIL through multidisciplinary, institutional and governmental collaborations and extra-mural research funding.
Research areas of particular interest include, but are not limited to:

  *   Contemporary biogeochemical cycles, ecology, hydrology, atmospheric trace gases, and polar climates, along with emerging mass spectrometric and/or optical measurement methods.
Further, the candidate will benefit from SIL's on-going interactions with analysts of the Laboratory for Radiocarbon Preparation and Research (https://instaar.colorado.edu/research/labs-groups/laboratory-for-ams-radiocarbon-preparation-and-research/), the Atmospheric Research Lab (https://instaar.colorado.edu/research/labs-groups/atmospheric-research-laboratory/), the Organic Geochemistry Group (https://instaar.colorado.edu/research/labs-groups/organic-geochemistry-laboratory/), and the Earth Systems Stable Isotope Lab (https://www.colorado.edu/geologicalsciences/resources/research-facilities/earth-systems-stable-isotope-laboratory), among others.
