Postdoc in carbon-cycle and climate research

A 2.5-year postdoctoral fellowship position (with a possibility for extension) is available for the research topic “terrestrial carbon cycle feedbacks under overshoot scenarios” at the biogeochemistry group of NORCE Climate and the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research. NORCE Climate conducts basic and applied research on the climate system, on anthropogenic climate change and its impact on societies, and on the feasibility of climate change mitigation options. NORCE Climate is one of the four partners of the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, which is the largest climate research centre in the Scandinavian countries and among the leading centres in Europe. Our biogeochemistry group works on quantifying the global cycles of carbon and related elements, on better constraining future projections of these cycles, and on sustainable mitigation options.

We offer an exciting job-opportunity in the field of global carbon cycle and Earth system modelling within the newly initiated project entitled “Emit now, mitigate later? IMPlications of temperature OverShoots for the Earth system” funded by the Research Council of Norway. The overarching goal of this project is to define limits for overshoot duration and magnitude beyond which potentially dangerous irreversible changes in the Earth system might occur. This is an exciting and challenging area of science, and we are looking for a motivated, curiosity-driven person, preferably with experience in terrestrial carbon cycle
science and in analyzing Earth system model projections.

The project has interesting international collaborations with Lund University (vegetation and fire modelling), University of Bern (global carbon cycle modeling), and the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (integrated assessment modelling). The position will be affiliated with the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research, which provides a lively and stimulating work environment.

Specific work tasks:
- Analyze simulations of (realistic and idealized) overshoot scenarios conducted with the Norwegian Earth System Model (NorESM) with a focus on permafrost and high latitude vegetation carbon feedbacks.
- Critically review simplified carbon cycle models (e.g. global box models) as to how well they simulate global carbon cycle dynamics under overshoot conditions.
- Develop improvements for simplified carbon cycle model where weaknesses for overshoot conditions have been identified.
Publish results in high level peer reviewed journals.

Education requirements:
- The successful candidate will have a PhD within meteorology, physics, mathematics, biology or related fields.

Desired Qualifications, Skills & Abilities:
- A strong background in terrestrial biogeochemistry and Earth system modelling, and knowledge of carbon cycle dynamics in general
- Skills in handling, analysing, and visualizing large model data sets
- Experience in working with Linux/Unix environments and with high level programming languages (e.g. FORTRAN, Matlab, R, Python)
- Experience with running Earth system models is an advantage
- Ability to work across disciplines
- Good team working skills while being proactive
- Proficiency in both written and oral English
