Research Scientist, Assoc - (19001004)
Description

Research Scientists are academic professionals whose primary responsibilities are to conduct and support research. UW Regulation 2-7 describes the activities that fall into this set of responsibilities for faculty; the same definition of research applies to Academic Professionals.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Center for Economic Geology Research (CEGR) at the School of Energy Resources (SER), University of Wyoming is seeking to hire a geoscientist with expertise in petroleum geology, petrophysics and/or geophysics. CEGR looks to hire a mid- to senior level scientist who specializes in subsurface geologic characterization. This position will help CEGR scientists to successfully meet the objectives of the CarbonSAFE program, which includes drilling a well and obtaining seismic data to characterize the CO2 storage potential of a study site in northeast Wyoming. This scientist will be expected to work within a team of geoscientists and engineers to analyze subsurface data (well logs, core, seismic data, etc.) to help develop geologic property models, as well as advancing research challenges associated with carbon storage and utilization. Proficiency in industry modeling software, such as Petrel, is expected. Experience in industry is preferred, though not a necessity.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Apply expertise to support research, data interpretation and problem solving related to subsurface geologic characterization

Apply geoscience theory to solve geologic and related CO2 storage and utilization research and analyses conducted by the CEGR team.

Aid in laboratory and experimental data gathering, including field work at injection and other sites.

Prepare scientific reports and publications.

Assist faculty, staff and SER students with technical problems by providing engineering expertise.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:

Prepare cost estimates and budget recommendations for the technical aspects of projects, equipment and supplies.

Identify new grant or related funding opportunities for CEGR.

Participate in funding presentations with CEGR leadership and staff.

Attend and present at conferences.

Oversee students or support staff as needed.

Education:

  * M.S. in Geology or Engineering
Experience:

  * Field data collection and analysis.
  *   Subsurface geologic characterization.
  * Laboratory experience in rock and fluid characterization (rock properties and petrophysical measurements).
  * Experience in CO2 geological storage and utilization.
  * Oil and gas industry experience preferred
  *   Grant writing experience preferred
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

Geologic principles, practices, and protocols applicable to reservoir characterization.
Data collection and analytical techniques.
