Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Structural Geology, Tectonics, Seismology, or Geophysics
The Department of Geosciences at Mississippi State University invites applications for a nine-month tenure-track position in structural geology, tectonics, seismology, or geophysics at the rank of assistant professor with an anticipated start date of August 15th, 2019. We seek an energetic and enthusiastic earth scientist, who uses field or laboratory-based techniques to conduct impactful research in structural geology, tectonics, seismology, geophysics, or a closely aligned field. Applicants will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their discipline of expertise as well as geological field methods and lead the department’s summer field camp program. Additionally, applicants will be expected to supervise master’s as well as doctoral graduate students. Successful applicants will hold a Ph.D. in geological sciences or a closely related field at the time of appointment and demonstrate: (1) evidence of (or the potential for) excellence in research, teaching, and student mentoring; (2) a record of peer-reviewed publication; (3) the capacity to develop and direct an active, externally-funded research program; and (4) a commitment to professional service.
The Department of Geosciences currently has 17 tenure-track faculty, three clinical professors, and six full-time instructors and awards B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees. Within the department, there are four areas of disciplinary emphasis: Geology, Geography, Geospatial Science, and Atmospheric Science. The department has been named a Center of Academic Excellence in Geospatial Sciences by the National Geospatial–Intelligence Agency and is closely aligned with a number of MSU research centers including the Geosystems Research Institute (www.gri.msstate.edu<http://www.gri.msstate.edu/>), the High Performance Computing Collaboratory (www.hpc.msstate.edu<http://www.hpc.msstate.edu/>), and the Institute for Imaging and Analytical Technologies (www.i2at.msstate.edu<http://www.i2at.msstate.edu/>).
