Job Summary
At its core, the program explores the intersection of sustainability science
and social inclusion, so the ideal candidate would have a professional
foundation that draws from both of these dimensions. An interest in
community-based, trans-disciplinary research on topics under the umbrella of
sustainability, particularly related to food, energy, water security, is
also preferred; however, this is not an absolute requirement. Equivalent
education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except
when there are legal requirements, such as a
license/certification/registration. This is a two-year position, with
possibility for extension based on funding.

Who We Are
The Global Sustainability Scholars (GSS) is a new program, funded by the
National Science Foundation. We train and support rising young professionals
in sustainability and innovation from diverse back grounds, disciplines and
worldviews. GSS seeks to recruit second-year undergraduate students from the
United States, who are interested in sustainability and to offer them a
three-year paid summer experience and a broad international professional
network. During the summers students will be supported to travel abroad,
conduct research, and build their professional network. The first cohort of
students will focus on the nexus between food, water, and energy and the
global sustainability development goals.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
* Lead and support the first GSS cohort of students, developing
curriculum focused on food Energy, Water Sustainability issues for an
undergraduate experiential education program which operates a three summer
(6-8 weeks each summer) field course in the US and abroad;
* Cultivate international research partnerships and maintain
collaborations for student research experiences.
* Work with Director and Co-director to design the student recruitment
strategy, including application and selection process, as well as develop
outreach to potential partners and funders that serve to expand the impact
of the program.
* Prepare and deliver content for onsite learning and field exercises.
* Facilitate learning experiences between stake holders and scholars.
* Execute field logistic.
* Provide academic mentoring and advising on professional development
to students.
* Develop follow-up modules that complement the first year curriculum.
* Assist in identifying partner Collaborative Research Action teams.
* Work closely with the GSS coordinator and international Research
teams (aka Collaborative Research Action) teams in arranging field logistics
related to travel, lodging, meals, and other matters during visits to
research sites.
* Establish monthly mentor check-ins with students before and after
the course.
* Contribute to program evaluation and reporting.
* Create (formally or informally) a positive learning environment for
students.
* Oversee course budget.
* Oversee one-two GSS Fellows who will be assisting the program.

The position requires significant travel abroad, and a high degree of
comfort living in close quarters to students (during the summer course) and

What We Require
What We Require
* MSc or PhD, in a discipline that is connected with sustainability is
welcome
* (e.g. Applied Anthropology, Education, Ecology, Policy, Engineering
Environmental Sciences, Agriculture)
* Strong background in fundamentals of sustainability science and/or
environmental justice.
* A minimum of 1 year of experience teaching undergraduate field
courses and mentoring undergraduates.
* Demonstrated experience with a diverse pool of students and
cultures, including but not limited to under-represented minorities and
first-generation students.
* Safe driving record and the ability to safely drive a van long
distances across varying terrain.
