Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The State Climate Office (SCO) is a public service unit that provides
climate information, including applications of that information to the
people of North Carolina and the Southeast US. The SCO is actively involved
in research that enhances its public service capabilities. Examples include
climate change and variability in North Carolina, El Niño/La Niña effects on
North Carolina weather and climate, agricultural and water resource
management, air quality and environmental management, disaster mitigation,
and land-falling hurricanes in North Carolina. The SCO derives its expertise
from the Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences, and other
departments within the College of Sciences and the College of Agricultural
and Life Sciences at NC State University.
Essential Job Duties
To sustain and develop the State Climate Office of North Carolina as a
Public Service Center. To define, and disseminate information about the
climatic and environmental factors that impact the people of North Carolina,
including predictions and projections. To provide public service through
extension activities and applied research in cooperation with other
entities. To be involved in the multifaceted effort of managing, accessing,
providing, analyzing,
disseminating, and interpreting information to promote environmental
stewardship. To describe, monitor, and assess climate, climate change and
the resulting impacts in North Carolina.
Primary responsibilities include:
1. Supervise SCO staff and students as they perform research, extension, and
educational activities of the Center.
2. Insure the maintenance and operation of the existing North Carolina
Environmental Climate Observation Network, as well as the timely
dissemination of these data to the public and their archiving
3. Supervise SCO staff and students in the provision of climate information
services.
4. Assist state and county agencies with weather and climate related issues.
5. Interact with K-12 teachers, students, community college teachers and
students, and other community organizations to help them address different
aspects of North Carolina climate.
6. Conduct research on North Carolina climate and its interactions with the
environment, economy, and infrastructure of the State as well as its impacts
on North Carolinians.
Other Work/Responsibilities
1. Develop new ideas for outreach, service, research, extension, and
engagement for the Center
2. Write proposals to state and federal agencies to secure additional
funding for the SCO
3. Assist extension scientists in integrating climate information into
agricultural and environmental systems
4. Maintain collaborations with climate stakeholders through engagement with
the SCOadvisory committee
Minimum Education/Experience
PhD in atmospheric sciences or related field or M.S with 10+ years
experience.
Departmental Required Skills
Ability to communicate weather and climate information and present ideas to
different audiences. Commitment to maintaining the strengths of the SCO and
develop new opportunities for funding and support.
Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education
Experience in working with and supervising staff involved in public outreach
and service. Experience in applying climate data on a regional basis.
Publication record in professional journals.
