*2 Assistant Professors, Earth and Environmental Science*

The Center for Earth and Environmental Science at the State University of
New York College at Plattsburgh invites applications for two tenure-track
positions at the rank of Assistant Professor in the general areas of “hard
rock” and sedimentary geology to begin in the Fall 2019 semester. We seek
broadly trained and creative geoscientists who demonstrate potential for
effective teaching at the undergraduate level, productive scholarship that
encourages student engagement, and collaboration with colleagues in the
Center’s environmental science, environmental planning, or ecology
programs. The successful candidates will be committed to excellence in
teaching, scholarship and service at an institution primarily dedicated to
undergraduate education. They will be expected to demonstrate an
understanding of and sensitivity to diversity and gender issues, as SUNY
Plattsburgh is committed to ensuring that its graduates are educated to
succeed in an increasingly complex, multicultural and interdependent world.

SUNY Plattsburgh is located on the shores of Lake Champlain in northeastern
New York and at the gateway to the six-million acre Adirondack Park, the
largest state-protected area in the contiguous United States. The campus
is about an hour drive northwest of Burlington, VT and south of Montreal,
QC. Our region has a rich geological legacy and offers an ideal setting
for geological study. The Taconic and Green mountains of the northern
Appalachian Province lie to our east and the high-grade metamorphic terrane
of the Adirondack Upland to our west. The Champlain Valley and the
contiguous St. Lawrence Valley to our north are underlain by sedimentary
rocks that were deposited along the rifted margin of the Laurentian
continent in the early Paleozoic. The region was further sculpted by
glacial processes during the late Pleistocene. We encourage applications
from candidates who would take full advantage of our extraordinary
geological environment to engage our students in field-based undergraduate
research and are willing to forge research collaborations with our SUNY
colleagues or those from other regional institutions.

*Responsibilities:* Candidates for the “hard rock” position should have
primary expertise that includes, but is not limited to, igneous or
metamorphic petrology, geochronology, global tectonics, structural geology,
or geochemistry. The successful candidate is expected to teach courses in
mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic petrology, and geochemistry, and may be
asked to teach our introductory physical geology or senior-level geology
seminar courses.

Candidates for the sedimentary geology position should have primary
expertise that includes, but is not limited to, sedimentology,
stratigraphy, sedimentary petrology, or basin analysis, and may be asked to
teach our introductory physical geology or senior-level geology seminar
courses.

Duties also include scholarship, student advisement and service to the
department and university. The successful candidates may be asked to teach
courses in a distance learning format.

*Required Qualifications:* Candidates must hold a PhD in geology or a
related field at the time of their appointment. The successful candidate
will have demonstrated an ability to work effectively and collegially with
faculty, staff, and administrators.

*Preferred Qualifications:* We are especially interested in candidates who
augment existing Center expertise in the areas of energy and mineral
resources, economic geology, geologic aspects of climate change or
paleoecology.

*SUNY Plattsburgh is an equal opportunity employer, committed to excellence
through diversity. As an equal opportunity employer and a government
contractor subject to VEVRAA, SUNY Plattsburgh complies with hiring
regulations regarding sex, color, religion, national origin, disability,
age and veteran status.*

*How to Apply:* Review of applications will begin immediately and continue
until the position is filled. Application materials received by November 16
will be guaranteed full consideration. Please apply to
http://jobs.plattsburgh.edu/postings/9661 and include a cover letter,
curriculum vitae, unofficial transcript, and contact information for 3
current references. Additional information may be requested at a later
step in the process. Official transcripts from an accredited institution
will be required prior to employment.
