The Department: The Department of Geological Sciences at UTEP is a vibrant group of 21 tenured and tenure-track faculty. The degrees the Department offers include the B.S., B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. in Geology, the B.S. and M.S. in Environmental Science, and the B.S. and M.S. in Geophysics. We also support student training in interdisciplinary Ph.D. programs with Environmental Science and Engineering and Computational Science. The Department research portfolio addresses global challenges in the environment and natural resources while taking advantage of our regional geological setting for research and education. Our integrative and collaborative efforts have resulted in research expenditures in excess of $10M over the last five years.

The Department of Geological Sciences occupies an attractive, 90,000-sq. ft. building containing offices, laboratories, and classrooms. We have a multi-collector (MC)-ICP-MS, an IRMS, an electron microprobe, and a Malvern particle size analyzer. Geophysical research infrastructure includes multiple seismometers, gravimeters, magnetometers, differential GPS receivers, surface and downhole geophysical tools (conductivity, resistivity), ground-penetrating radar, and extensive computational and software resources. In addition, the collaborative research environment at UTEP affords access to a variety of analytical equipment in the Departments of Metallurgy and Materials Science, Chemistry, and Biological Sciences and the Nanomaterials Integration Lab. Interactions with the Center for Environmental Resource Management and other multidisciplinary research centers are encouraged.

Job Description:

The Department is proud to announce the newly created Kenneth F. and Patricia Clark Distinguished Chair in Economic Geology. The one-million-dollar endowment shall be used to support the activities of the Distinguished Chair, in particular to enhance research in the field of Economic Geology and/or Resource Extraction, and to support the development of students' abilities to gain employment in such sectors. We are interested in applicants with an exceptional record of successful projects in the area of Economic Geology. The candidate must demonstrate the capacity to develop and strengthen the Department's ties with the mining and extractive industries, as well as the capacity to mentor students and guide their projects through to publication. The successful candidate will teach a combination of undergraduate and graduate classes. The candidate will be expected to attract research funding from external sources. The hired person will have the opportunity to participate in the Department's Center for Entrepreneurial Geosciences (https://science.utep.edu/cegs/index.php<https://science.utep.edu/cegs/index.php>). Salary for this full Professor position is negotiable.

Requirements:

The Department of Geological Sciences is interested in hiring a faculty member with a distinguished career in the area of Economic Geology that is capable of teaching at the Undergraduate and Graduate level, conducting fundamental research, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and mentoring students in applied mineral exploration, genesis of ore deposits and/or other related areas. Candidates capable of building active research programs and engaging in collaborative research are encouraged to apply.

Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with either industrial and/or academic backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Such achievements as: a track record of peer-reviewed publications, attainment of research funding, leadership, project management, discoveries and or exploration success and entrepreneurship would be viewed favorably. Teaching experience in the field, laboratory or classroom will also be a consideration. Demonstrated collaborations in research are valued as well.
