The Department of Marine Ecosystems and Society (MES) at UM RSMAS is recruiting a tenure track or tenured faculty member in Integrated Coastal Zone Processes and Management. The position is open to any rank and the salary is commensurate with rank/experience.

This is an extraordinary opportunity. RSMAS is one of the world’s premier tropical marine and atmospheric research institutions focused on improving prediction and management of Earth’s coupled physical, biological and human ecosystems. The MES Department’s vision is to foster innovative multidisciplinary research and education centered on the conservation and sustainability of marine ecosystems and the services they provide to society. RSMAS recently completed a multi-million-dollar renovation of its Virginia Key facilities.
We have entered a new era of rising seas where our shorelines are moving inland, and sea level rise coupled with extreme tides and severe storms are causing loss of land and infrastructure.  As the rate of rise accelerates, so does the potential for a range of negative socioeconomic impacts, from marine ecosystems and fisheries to infrastructure and associated industries.  We are seeking an individual with expertise in analytical, statistical and computer modeling research at the interface between coastal processes, hydrodynamics and the sustainability of human-natural coastal ecosystems.  The individual will address climate adaptation and resilience through modeling of tides, ocean waves, precipitation, river discharges, currents, storm surges and other relevant human dimensions of coastal processes.  In particular, we seek someone who may also employ modern operations research and stochastic process methods to inform policy-oriented research and decision-making.  The individual will be expected to work closely with MES faculty, whose strengths include fisheries science, natural resource law and economics, and decision sciences related to marine ecosystems, fisheries, and coastal impact assessment.

We seek outstanding candidates with high scholarly productivity, ability to secure extramural funds, and excellent teaching and communication skills. They will be expected to enhance the School’s undergraduate, masters and Ph.D. programs, and will build linkages with other parts of the University including, but not limited to, the Institute of Theoretical and Mathematical Ecology, Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy, Departments of Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science.
Ph.D. in related field is required.
