Organization and Job ID
Job ID: 308317
Directorate: Earth & Biological Sciences
Division: Atmospheric Sciences & Global Change
Group: Advanced Study & Development
Job Description
The Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) seeks a postdoctoral scientist to mainly work on a project related to severe thunderstorm modeling and observational analysis. The main work is about high-resolution modeling and observational analysis of severe storms to understand dynamical and physical factors impacting severe storms including changes in temperature, land surface, and aerosols. The postdoc associate may also involve in conducting global climate models (GCMs) simulations at regionally-refined configuration and evaluating the performance of such simulations in simulating severe storm properties.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.
Preferred Qualifications
The candidate should have demonstrated expertise in severe storm dynamics and physics, and CRM/LES modeling. Proficiency with FORTRAN in atmospheric modeling is required. Understanding of atmospheric and land-surface observational data and familiar with the observational data assimilation and analysis are pluses. Teamwork and strong communication skills for engaging with project teams are essential.
Required:
Demonstrated familiarity with numerical modeling and analysis of the atmosphere and severe weather
Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
Ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams.
Interest in contributing to an active intellectual environment
Preferred:
Demonstrated expertise in physical understanding of severe storm related processes.
Familiarity with high performance computing, and statistical analysis
Experience with land-atmosphere interactions, aerosol-cloud interactions, and data assimilation.
Experience with computer languages usually used for climate modeling and analysis (Fortran, Python, R, NCL, Matlab, IDL, etc.)
Familiarity with Linux/Unix computational environments
A Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Hydrology, Physics, or related subjects is required
