Sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods of time and performing repetitive motion tasks. Ability to lift objects up to 50 lbs. on occasion, to independently navigate rough terrain, and to work under variable and inclement weather or field conditions. Intermittent job-related travel.

Job Summary


The Kentucky Geological Survey at the University of Kentucky is seeking a Hydrogeologist for the Water Resources Section. The primary responsibility of this position is as manager of the Kentucky Groundwater Data Repository (KGDR), a legislatively mandated activity of KGS that includes compilation, storage, and dissemination of water well and groundwater data collected in the state. Examples of data compiled and accessed through the KGDR include water-well construction logs provided to KGS through the Kentucky Water Well Drillers Certification Program, and groundwater sampling/quality data collected by KGS, various state and federal environmental and resource management agencies, other university researchers, and geologists and engineers working in the private sector. Additional responsibilities of this position include working as assigned to contribute to the KGS research mission as a team member to conduct hydrogeological, environmental, energy, or geological mapping research beneficial to the public and economic welfare of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

Skills / Knowledge / Abilities


As GWDR manager: advanced database management skills, including the ability to create, manipulate, and edit data tables within a relational database management system. Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, and ArcGIS is required. A knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL or "Sequel") code is helpful. Will be expected to develop working knowledge and gain expertise in use of ArcGIS ArcHydro for Groundwater.
Working professional knowledge of applied hydrogeological research techniques, groundwater-quality indicators and chemical composition, water-well construction, general knowledge of Kentucky laws and regulations pertinent to water-well driller certification, water-well construction, and water use permits. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must have, or be willing to develop, knowledge and skills needed to master and use a variety of scientific and data processing software as required to accomplish assigned project and research objectives.

Preferred Education/Experience


Masters Degree in geology, civil engineering, or related field, with emphasis in hydrogeology or groundwater hydrology + 3 years of experience in related fields as degree.
Eligibility to obtain a Kentucky PG or PE license is preferred.

Driver's license preferred.
