The Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Connecticut (UConn) invites applications for a 9-month, tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in the area of physical oceanography. We seek candidates with physical oceanographic expertise that can include turbulence, waves, air-sea interaction, and physical ocean dynamics. Preference will be given to those who apply observations to studying processes controlling mass, momentum, and energy transfer across boundaries (atmosphere and benthic), across density fronts, and throughout the ocean interior. Competitive candidates should have experience in the development and use of modern measurement technologies, data analysis, and in the advancement of theory.
The Department of Marine Sciences (www.marinesciences.uconn.edu<http://www.marinesciences.uconn.edu/>) has 20 tenure-track faculty members, 4 research professors, and an average enrollment of 45 graduate students and 70 undergraduate majors. The department and its faculty have state of the art research facilities including the R/V Connecticut, smaller vessels, other field instrumentation systems (buoys, gliders, ROVs), computational resources, analytical instrumentation facilities, and research laboratories which support a strong record of research excellence. The department is centered at the Avery Point campus, located on the coast in southeastern Connecticut. Opportunities for collaboration exist with faculty in physical, biological, chemical, and geological oceanography, meteorology, and in other departments throughout the university.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate is expected to grow a nationally-recognized extramurally-funded research program and a scholarly publication record that contributes to the department’s research mission in marine sciences. Teaching duties include existing marine sciences courses that support the undergraduate and graduate curricula, as well as specialized courses in the candidate’s area of expertise. Advising undergraduate and graduate students is required. Professional service to the department, the university, and the scientific community is expected.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) in oceanography or a related field
* Postdoctoral experience relevant to the advertised position
* Excellent oral and written communication skills
* Evidence of strong research and publication records commensurate with time since Ph.D.
* Research skills and experience that demonstrate the applicant’s ability to contribute to the advertised position
* Deep commitment to promoting diversity through academic and research programs
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Evidence of capability to generate and grow an innovative research program
* Commitment to excellence in teaching, training, and mentoring of students
* Demonstrable ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity of the learning experience
APPOINTMENT TERMS
This is a full-time (9-month appointment) tenure-track position within the Department of Marine Sciences with an anticipated start date of Fall 2019. The successful candidate’s office, research space, and primary teaching duties will be at the Avery Point campus in Groton, CT. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
