CIRES/GSD SOS Software Developer

The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) Boulder, Colorado is
seeking a Professional Research Assistant to work in the NOAA Earth System Research
Laboratory (ESRL)/Global Systems Division (GSD) located in Boulder, Colorado.
The person in this position will provide a broad range of research, development, and program
support for the Science On a Sphere (r) (SOS) software suite ( sos.noaa.gov ), as well as technical
support for customers at SOS sites worldwide. SOS is a room sized, global display system that
uses computers and video projectors to display planetary data onto a six-foot diameter sphere,
creating a giant animated globe. SOS was created to further NOAA's educational goals, and
promotes environmental literacy through informal education programs.

Responsibilities

Software Development
● Maintain and enhance software in the suite of SOS software applications
● Design and implement new features for SOS software releases with other developers and
independently
● Explore new technologies for the SOS project
Technical Support
● Diagnose and fix a variety of recurring and/or novel issues with the SOS software suite of
applications and hardware systems
● Answer SOS customer questions by telephone and by email
● Perform remote upgrades, configuration, and system fixes for SOS customers using
remote access software
● Occasionally visit SOS sites to provide issue troubleshooting and fix problems
● Occasionally go to new SOS sites to perform site installations

Requirements

What we require:
● Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Atmospheric Sciences, or a related
scientific field
● Ability to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries (NACI, federal background
check) because the job is located inside a federal building.
What you will need:
● Ability to work independently as well as within a team-based environment, handle
multiple tasks, and ensure projects meet deadlines
● Excellent problem-solving skills and logical thinking ability
● Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, including working well
directly in a customer support role
What we’d like you to have:
● Programming experience in C++, Python, Tcl, and shell scripts
● Knowledge of 2D/3D visualization techniques and tools, such as the OpenGL library
● Experience with relational databases, such as MySQL or Sqlite
● Expertise developing software in a Linux environment
● Exposure to iOS and Windows touch screen devices
● Experience using code management software, such as GIT or Subversion (SVN)
● Experience using issue trackers, such as Redmine
● Experience with technical support of remote customers
● Ability to travel occasionally to SOS customer sites or conferences, including
internationally
● Exposure to Agile development practices
Preferred qualifications may be used to further reduce the pool of applicants to those who are
most highly qualified.
