2. About ECMWF 

ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service, producing and disseminating numerical weather predictions to its Member States. ECMWF carries out scientific and technical research directed to the improvement of its forecasts, collects and processes large amounts of observations, and manages a long-term archive of meteorological data. Satellite and in situ observations provide the information for up-to-date global analyses and climate reanalyses of the atmosphere, ocean and land surface.

3. Summary of the role 

OpenIFS is a core activity at ECMWF that creates, maintains and supports versions of the ECMWF Integrated Forecast System (IFS) for external users, for both research and education. OpenIFS started in 2011 and now has over 50 licensed institutions internationally using OpenIFS models. The aims of OpenIFS are; to make it possible for the scientific community to use the IFS in their own institutes, to foster a user community, increase research and training in NWP, and promote the use of IFS. This will widen the use of IFS bringing benefits to the community, ECMWF and its member states, and leading to increased research collaborations with ECMWF. An objective is to improve the IFS through research and development enabled by use of OpenIFS in external research groups. 



This role is in the Integrated Forecast Systems (IFS) Section of the Research Department (RD) at ECMWF. The IFS Section is responsible for overseeing the development of the IFS model and handover of IFS model releases to operations. This role will require significant engagement with ECMWF research scientists and more widely throughout ECMWF. Engaging with external stakeholders and users of OpenIFS is a significant part of this role. The successful candidate will be expected to be proactive in engaging with external users to foster good working relations, particularly in areas of interest to ECMWF and to contribute to the scientific and technical development of IFS through OpenIFS enabled external research and development. 

4. Main duties and key responsibilities 

    * Developing and maintaining the OpenIFS model, including required documentation 
    * Contributing to OpenIFS project objectives 
    * Engaging with and supporting OpenIFS external users on scientific and technical aspects 
    * Contributing to OpenIFS training and user workshops 
    * Incorporating OpenIFS led developments into IFS 
    * Contributing to scientific and technical development of IFS releases and evaluation

6. Qualifications and experience required 



Education 	

A university degree in Meteorology, Physics, Mathematics or a related subject. 


A PhD in a related subject is desirable but not essential. 


Experience 	

Experience of programming languages in a scientific environment is essential. 



Experience of community modelling is desirable. 



Experience of earth system modelling in a research environment is desirable. 



Experience of source code management and data formats would be an advantage. 



Experience with scientific codes on high performance computing environments would be an advantage. 


Knowledge and skills (including language) 	

Knowledge of an earth system science is desirable. 



Good technical skills, familiarity with Linux and programming languages (including Fortran) and scripting languages. 



Some knowledge of IFS or OpenIFS would be desirable but is not essential. 



Knowledge of code development and testing on a range of computer systems and compilers is desirable. 



Candidates must be able to work effectively in English and interviews will be conducted in English. 



A good knowledge of one of the Centre’s other working languages (French or German) would be an advantage. 

7. Other information Grade remuneration 


The successful candidate will be recruited at the A2 grade, according to the scales of the Co-ordinated Organisations and the annual basic salary will be £58,238.40 net of tax. This position is assigned to the employment category STF-C as defined in the Staff Regulations.

Starting date: As soon as possible. 

Length of contract: Four years, with the possibility of a further contract.
