The Climate & Ecosystem Sciences<https://eesa.lbl.gov/our-divisions/climate-ecosystem-sciences/> Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) seeks an Atmospheric Science Postdoctoral Scholar to research land-atmosphere interactions across multiple scales. This position is part of an interdisciplinary project to advance fundamental understanding and modeling of soil moisture-vegetation-precipitation feedbacks affecting the statistics of drought and heavy precipitation extremes. Research topics include the role of soil moisture, surface heat fluxes, and cold-pools in convective initiation, land-surface and boundary-layer influences on the timing and intensity of deep convection on diurnal to multiday timescales, and regimes or preferred modes of multiscale land-atmosphere interactions. The successful candidate will join a highly collaborative and effective team solving fundamental problems in climate and atmospheric science.

To be considered, please attach to your online application in PDF form:

*         CV

* One-two page application letter describing research interests and relevant experience

* Contact information for three references

* One-two publications, via Berkeley Lab's jobs portal

What You Will Do:

* Design, conduct, and publish research on clouds and related land-atmosphere interactions.

* Analyze and interpret complex atmospheric model experiments and observational datasets, in terms of atmospheric physics and dynamics.

* Combine observations from DOE Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program (ARM) facilities and AmerFlux, and cloud-resolving model experiments, to advance DOE's Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM).

* Publish peer-reviewed journal articles, and communicate findings to peers.

* Contribute to reports and communications with program managers that fund this work.

What Is Required:

* PhD(earned within 2 years) in Atmospheric Science, or related field, with equivalent research experience.

* Expertise in atmospheric modeling, and working knowledge of remote sensing, or vice versa.

* Strong background and interest in atmospheric physics and dynamics.

* Established record of publication and presentation.

* Ability to work independently in a collaborative environment.

* Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Additional Desired Qualifications:

* Data assimilation or observation/remote-sensing simulators.

* Familiarity with terrestrial ecosystem science or land-atmosphere interactions research.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled.

Notes:

* This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

* Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

* This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

* Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

* This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

* Work will be primarily performed at: Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
