Description

Global-scale Observations of the Limb and Disk (GOLD) Postdoc
Position Summary:

A postdoctoral position is available at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics ﴾LASP﴿. The duration of the appointment is 1 years, with the possibility of renewal. The successful candidate will perform research on assimilating data from the GOLD mission as well as data from satellite and ground‐based observations of the space environment to address the science goals of the mission ﴾gold web site address﴿, submit the results of the research to refereed journals, and present results at scientific meetings.

Job Duties:

The successful candidate will be working with data from the Global‐scale Observations of the Limb and Disk ﴾GOLD﴿mission, a NASA mission of opportunity hosted on the SES‐14 satellite, to examine the global‐scale behavior of the Earth’s thermosphere and ionosphere in response to the forcing from above, by the Sun, and from below, by the lower atmosphere of the Earth. The goal is to advance understanding of the spatial and temporal changes in the neutral atmosphere at the boundary between Earth’s atmosphere and space and the Earth’s ionosphere. The successful applicant will be working with Dr. Mihail Codrescu at NOAA’s SWPC and Dr. Richard Eastes at LASP. LASP is located at the University of Colorado in Boulder. The area provides abundant opportunities for scientific collaborations.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Applicants who have a PhD and strong computer science skills as well as an interest in modeling of the Earth’s space environment are encouraged to apply. The applicant must have completed a Ph.D. in physics, atmospheric physics, or a relevant field, within five years of the application date. The successful candidate should demonstrate a strong background in computational physics or the physics of the Earth’s space environment ﴾especially ionospheric/thermospheric physics﴿. Excellent communication skills, both oral and written are important, and the applicant must speak and write English fluently.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience in the physical sciences or engineering, especially experience working with atmospheric models or large data sets is desirable. Also desirable is a PhD in Atmospheric Science, Space Physics, or a related field, with strong data assimilation/analysis and programming skills.
