The Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) has an opening for a Research Scientist, located in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Earth System Research Laboratory Chemical Science Division (NOAA/ESRL/CSD), Boulder, Colorado. This position is within the Atmospheric Composition and Chemical Processes group. The selected candidate will work in close cooperation with the research staff of CIRES and CSD in developing laser-based spectroscopic instrumentation for measurements of atmospheric trace gases and aerosols, and interpretation of atmospheric in-situ measurements to address questions related to transport and chemistry of sulfur dioxide and formation of aerosols in the troposphere and stratosphere.
Duties:
- Participation in the design, construction, and integration of field instruments for measuring aerosols and sulfur dioxide on research aircraft. This includes responsibility for a laser-induced fluorescence instrument for measurements of sulfur dioxide on the NASA DC-8 during the FIREX-AQ campaign.
- Operation, maintenance, and calibration of sulfur dioxide and aerosol instrumentation.
- Development and maintenance of custom fiber laser systems.
- Participation in field missions to make atmospheric measurements. Field missions often require up to several weeks at deployment sites.
- Interpretation of data sets to address the roles of sulfur dioxide and aerosols in atmospheric processes and climate change. This includes organization of multi-parameter data sets, interaction with other instrument investigators, and the use of models and model results and/or satellite datasets.
- Preparation of data and its interpretation for presentation at scientific meetings and for publication in peer-reviewed journals of the atmospheric sciences.
Qualifications:
PhD in physics, chemistry, or related field.
Interest in building and using custom instrumentation to make measurements in the atmosphere and using these observations to address atmospheric problems of contemporary interest. A background in atmospheric science is highly desirable.
Experience with the design, building, operation, calibration, and maintenance of complex instrumentation in a laboratory or field environment. Experience with lasers, optics and optical sensors is highly desirable.
Experience with development and presentation of scientific results for meetings and for publication in scientific journals.
