Brief details
This project will use global modelling tools to investigate the drivers of poor air quality, and how they might change in the future. We are particularly interested ozone, which is linked to poor human health, crop yield impacts, and climate change. Ozone is not emitted directly, but forms as the result of photochemical reactions of precursor emissions from natural and anthropogenic sources. The relative importance of different precursor emissions is changing, with consumer products becoming more important than road transport in some regions. It is uncertain how such regional changes are affecting global ozone trends and, due to the intercontinental transport of air, how emissions from one region may be offsetting control strategies in another.

This project involves development of the TOMCAT global atmospheric chemistry model. Simulations of the model will be used to predict regional/global ozone trends and the resulting air quality and climate impacts. The model will be tested by comparison to a new database of ozone (and precursor) atmospheric measurements.

Studentship funding: Full studentships (UK/EU tuition fees and stipend: £14,553, 2017/18, tax free) for UK/EU students for 3.5 years. Unfortunately, funding is not available for International (non EU) students.

Academic Requirements: First-class or 2.1 (Hons) degree, or Masters degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate subject.
