What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?

Salary: $94,890 (Step 01) to $123,358 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Responsibilities

As a Research Social Scientist within the Fort Collins Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

- Publish original social science research in high impact journals
- Address complex natural resource management issues
- Work on interdisciplinary science teams to address complex natural resource management issues
- Design data collection methods and apply statistical analysis techniques to conduct social science
investigations

Travel Required

Occasional travel - 2 nights of travel per month may be required.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?
o    Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment. o    You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Qualifications
Basic Education Requirement:

Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

OR

Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

OR

Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

In addition to the basic education requirements, you must have 1-year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the Federal service. Examples include:

-Designing social science research projects; conducting social science data collection; quantitative data analysis; and producing written reports and peer reviewed publications.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
Education
o    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
o    Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

--Basis of Rating: Category rating will be used in the ranking and selection process for this position. The quality categories are Best Qualified, Well Qualified, and Qualified. 1. Knowledge of social science in the context of natural resource management sufficient to conduct research investigations on the human dimensions of natural resource management including contexts such as: human behavioral change, attitudes, demographics, communication, decision sciences,

2. Ability to apply research methods, tools, principles including statistical analysis or analytical-modeling techniques to conduct social or economic science investigations applying a social-ecological systems approach to natural resource management and decision making; in contexts relevant to the
USGS mission including but not limited to the human dimensions of wildlife, recreational access to public lands, energy development, or natural hazards.
3. Ability to develop proposals for the development, implementation, and management of research projects using initiative and judgment in planning the approach to the study, the methods to be used, data collection, interpretation of data, and publication of results.
4. The ability to develop a research program, bringing together multi-disciplinary teams and thinking across discipline boundaries (e.g., a discipline outside of applicant's primary one) to develop new research directions and tools to conduct research to answer management needs.
5. Demonstrated skill in communicating technical results in writing through peer reviewed publication of journal articles and verbally through lectures and presentations.
