Science and Technology on a Mission!
For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)
has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.
We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Researcher to conduct research on
modeling the microphysical processes of aerosols in the troposphere and the
stratosphere. You will be pursuing original research on predictability and
uncertainty of the microphysical processes of aerosols. This position is in
the Atmospheric, Earth & Energy Division.
Essential Duties
- Conduct creative research using microphysics analysis and predictive
atmospheric models and observations at the cloud resolving scale and/or at
the mesoscale.
- Conduct original research on the predictability of microphysical and
chemical processes under ambient and disturbed atmosphere conditions.
- Conduct creative research on the physics and chemistry of in-cloud
processes (physical and chemical) under a range of conditions in the
troposphere and the stratosphere.
- Incorporate aerosol physics in atmospheric transport studies for
consequence management.
- Document research by publishing papers in peer-reviewed journals, and
present technical results within the Department of Energy (DOE) community
and at scientific conferences.
- Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to
accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Recent PhD in atmospheric science, engineering, physics, or a closely
related discipline.
- Experience in one or more of the following areas: modeling of atmospheric
aerosols, analysis of physics and chemistry of aerosols, experimental
measurements of aerosols, or processes meaningful to cloud processes.
- Experience working with model and observational datasets.
- Proficient in at least one scientific programming language for modeling
and climate data analysis (e.g., Python, Fortran, C++).
- Experience with visualization and analysis programs.
- Ability to effectively perform independent research, and travel as
required to collaborate with sponsors.
- Proficient verbal and written communication skills, as evidenced by
published results and presentations.
- Experience collaborating effectively with a team of scientists of diverse
backgrounds.
Desired Qualifications
- Knowledge of other parts of the atmosphere and Earth system.
- Experience using super-computers and UNIX/LINUX.
- Experience in uncertainty quantification and statistics.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position
will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE)
Q-level clearance.
If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to
determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified
information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject
to random drug testing. Q-level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. If
you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be
required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance
will be processed/granted.
Note: This is a two-year Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of
extension to a maximum of three years. Eligible candidates are recent PhDs
within five years of the month of the degree award at time of hire date.
