What General Information Do I Need To Know About This Position?
This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition.
Salary: $73,375 (Step 01) to $95,388 (Step 10); NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.
Responsibilities
As an Ecologist within the Wetlands & Aquatic Research Center (WARC), some of your specific duties will include:
* Serves as a WARC Task Leader on analysis and modeling projects involving the natural resources and priority issues of our DOI and other partners, specifically in support of the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Proctection, and Restoration Act's (CWPPRA) Coastwide Reference Monitoring System (CRMS) Program.
* Serves as team leader for the methodology implementation effort that supports analysis and modeling activities. Key responsibilities for identifying analysis needs and developing implementation strategies for the analysis and interpretation of natural resource data; identification of scientific approaches to resolving ecological uncertainties; management decision recommendations.
* Contributes to writing research proposals for funding of programs and writes work plans and study plans for the conduct of research projects, as well as peer-reviewed manuscripts for publication.
* Collaborates with other researches at WARC, other scientists and with agency partners in the development of research plans, evaluations of the scientific and statistical validity of plans, and the implementation of studies. This involvement extends to include the conveyance of findings to partners and contribution of scientific input to agency planning and reporting.
* Develops and maintains a high level of scientific competence in quantitative methodology. This includes (a) knowledge of mathematical fundamentals from which new methods can be derived, (b) knowledge of modern theories of casual modeling and casual network analysis, (c) knowledge of currently popular software packages so taht programs can be developed that are freely available to end users and (d) knowledge of the analysis needs of natural resources specialist.
* Operates a government owned vehicle as an incidental driver.

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:
**One year of appropriate specialized experience that is in ecology, biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research is qualifying if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled.
Examples of GS-11 level work may include: 1) design, development and conduct of protocols to analyze spatial and temporal data; 2) conduct of sampling, experimental design, statistical analyses and biometrics relative to wetlands ecology; 3) independent planning and conduct of comprehensive biological studies/investigations and requests for proposals; 4) modifying and adapting standard biological techniques and procedures; 5) serving as a technical resource on biological issues; 6) design and management of projects, studies to provide an understanding of the effects of environmental perturbations in study areas.
