Postdoctoral position in high-resolution simulations of extratropical
cyclones, KIT Germany

Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Institute of Meteorology and Climate
Research - Department Troposphere Research, Karlsruhe, Germany

We are looking for a postdoctoral scientist to join the research group
"Cloud-radiative interactions with the North Atlantic storm track" led
by Dr. Aiko Voigt at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. The group
studies how diabatic cloud processes interact with, and thereby shape,
the extratropical circulation and its response to climate change. The
group combines weather and climate perspectives, with a particular focus
on the North Atlantic storm track and cloud-radiative effects. The group
is part of the BMBF-funded German-wide research initiative "HD(CP)2:
High definition clouds and precipitation for advancing climate prediction."

The postdoctoral scientist will apply the high-resolution simulation
approach developed by HD(CP)2 and the group to understand how clouds
affect extratropical cyclones and their representation in regional and
global models. The successful candidate will conduct and analyze
simulations with the new German ICON weather and climate model over a
range of resolutions from 40km to 300m. These simulations will include
the period of the recent NAWDEX field campaign and hindcasts of past
extratropical cyclones. The postdoctoral scientist will have access to
the outstanding modeling and observational infrastructure provided by
HD(CP)2 and will have ample opportunities to interact with scientists
from HD(CP)2, as well as the wider German and international research
community. The position includes a 3-month visit to the Laboratoire de
Meteorologie Dynamique in Paris to work with Dr. Gwendal Riviere and Dr.
Sandrine Bony.

We are seeking applicants with a doctoral degree in meteorology,
atmospheric science or climate science. The position requires a
background in atmospheric dynamics and/or cloud processes, and
experience with numerical modeling and data analysis (e.g., Fortran,
Matlab, Python, Linux, shell scripting, cdo). The position includes
possibilities for teaching and student supervision. For example, the
postdoc is encouraged to participate in the supervision of the two PhD
students that are part of the group, and to contribute to the teaching
activities of the group.

The position is remunerated according to TV-L E13 (approximately 2400
Euro net salary per month) with extensive social and health care
benefits. The group is based at the research campus of KIT located about
10 km north of the city center of Karlsruhe. The position can start as
early as March 1, 2018 and is available for an initial period of two
years. An extension is possible based on progress and funding availability.

Review of applications will begin on 15 January 2018 and will continue
until the position is filled. Applications shall be directed to Dr. Aiko
Voigt via email to aiko.voigt at kit.edu in one pdf-file and shall include
a CV with a list of publications, a one-page statement of research
interests, a copy of a recent peer-reviewed research article, and
contact details of two references.

Inquiries about the position shall be directed to Dr. Aiko Voigt,
aiko.voigt at kit.edu. More information can be found at
