[ES_JOBS_NET] 2 year postdoc: Drought mortality modelling

Dear all,

I am looking for a talented postdoc who’s interested in developing and applying a representation of plant hydraulics and hydraulic failure within a dynamic global vegetation model (LPJ-GUESS). The position is funded for two years. We are aiming to answer questions such as: What is the role of droughts in mediating tree mortality across the globe? How does drought-induced mortality affect forest form and function? What are the effects on the global carbon cycle and ultimately climate? The position is part of the ERC-funded project TreeMort, which aims to understand and quantify how rates and drivers of tree mortality vary across the globe, and thus better constrain projections of terrestrial carbon uptake.

The postdoc will become a member of a dynamic team of researchers at the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (also home of the first mature temperate forest FACE experiment http://www.birmingham.ac.uk/research/activity/bifor/face/index.aspx). Along with advancing our understanding of ecosystem function, they will further develop their skills in quantitative ecosystem modelling, scientific code development and data analysis. There will be substantial opportunities for travel and to build upon international networks.

The successful candidate should have a PhD degree in a natural or physical science subject, or similar. Training or experience in plant physiological processes or vegetation modelling is highly desirable, but not essential. They should have experience in scientific coding (C++ an advantage) and the ability to contribute to developing new code, a track record in scientific publication, and excellent written and spoken communication skills in English.
