DESCRIPTION
The U.S. Center of the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) seeks a highly motivated individual to lead its Water Program. SEI is an international research organization working to advance sustainable development through research, policy analysis and capacity building. Headquartered in Sweden, SEI has a global reach, with eight centers spanning five continents. The U.S. Center has offices in Somerville, MA, Davis, CA, and Seattle, WA, with the Water Program staff based in Somerville and Davis.
The Program Director will lead Water Program staff (currently 11), and oversee their research planning, fundraising, outreach, and staff management activities. We expect the Program Director to substantively engage with staff, providing guidance on a range of water resource planning studies and in the procurement of new projects. We are particularly interested in candidates who can work across disciplines.
The Water Group is widely recognized for its work on water resource modeling and policy analysis around the world. Our watershed modeling and planning framework, the Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) system, is used in more than 180 countries with over 25,000 users. Capacity building is central to our work, particularly in developing countries. The U.S. Water Program collaborates closely with colleagues throughout SEI and externally.

Primary Responsibilities:

·        Lead the Water Program in its effort to enhance the impact, timeliness, and rigor of its work
·        Play a leading role in fundraising efforts for the Water Program, which currently has an annual budget of approximately USD 3 million
·        Support project managers in project design, staffing, and management decisions and by identifying new project opportunities that continue a history of innovation within the Program’s portfolio of work
·        Manage, mentor, collaborate with and provide regular guidance and feedback to Program colleagues in our Davis and Somerville offices
·        Monitor and maintain the staffing levels, competencies, and funding streams of the Program
·        Contribute to the life and management of the US Center and SEI as a whole
·        Explore cross-program opportunities and collaborations with colleagues within the US center, at other SEI centers, and beyond
·        Assist in raising the profile and expanding the reach of the Water Program and SEI through external presentations and engagement with the media, decision-makers and policy-makers

REQUIREMENTS
The successful applicant will have:

·        An advanced degree (PhD or equivalent experience) and significant work experience in water resource management, hydrology, engineering or a related field
·        Proven ability to lead and manage in a collaborative environment
·        Strong writing, technical, communications, interpersonal, and networking skills
·        Demonstrated ability to secure significant financial support from a wide variety of sources
·        Experience in, and dedication to, providing inspirational leadership through mentoring and professional development goal setting
·        Proven success building strategic partnerships
·        A commitment to ensuring and promoting an equitable, diverse and inclusive work culture
·        Recognition for expertise and excellence related to water resource planning
·        Proficiency in spoken and written English

Additional highly desirable qualifications include:

·        Networks and contacts in one or more of the following areas: watershed planning, watershed modeling, climate adaptation, hydropower development, ecosystem management, and related areas
·        Proficiency in one or more languages other than English
·        Interest in exploring gender and social equity consideration in watershed planning and research
·        Highly proficient in modeling tools

Location: Davis, California
Salary Range: Competitive compensation package commensurate with experience and qualifications
