Job Description and Duties
The Atmospheric Processes Research Section (APRS) of the Research Division (RD) is seeking a positive thinking and motivated Air Resources Engineer to lead agricultural air pollution research to address California's immediate and emerging air quality and climate change mitigation objectives.  The incumbent will work closely with internal and external stakeholders to develop progressive and scientifically robust understanding of air pollution emissions, air pollution transport, and atmospheric chemistry that impacts California's air.  The incumbent will use CARB's advanced mobile measurement platform and state-of-the-science air analyzers to lead and conduct in-house research projects to aid the development and the evaluation of NAAQS attainment strategies and climate change mitigation programs.  The incumbent will interconnect internal and external research efforts with California's existing regulations and policies, and will utilize advanced data analysis capabilities and extensive knowledge in atmospheric sciences to distill complex research findings into policy and program relevant presentations, reports, and documents that clearly and effectively communicate their importance to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.  The incumbent is expected to manage extramural research contracts and disseminate important research findings through peer-review publications.

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is located in the beautiful CalEPA building in downtown Sacramento. We are located close to light rail and parking garages/lots. The building includes Golden 1 ATM access, an exercise room, a cafeteria, and an onsite daycare facility. Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

The most competitive candidate will possess an advanced engineering degree with emphasis in atmospheric sciences.  The candidate should also possess strong scientific and technical knowledge in California's agricultural research, particularly for dairies.  The candidate is also expected to have fundamental knowledge in atmospheric chemistry and physics, demonstrated ability to work as a team member, inclination to meet deadlines, flexibility to successfully complete evolving assignments, and hands on experiences with various analytical instruments such as cavity ring-down spectroscopy, LiDARs, FTIR, GC-MS, and/or ICP-MS.  The candidate is also expected to understand basic coding languages such as Python, R, and/or Fortran.  Candidates with contracting experiences, and extensive knowledge in air pollutant emissions (e.g., ammonia, methane, and other VOCs) from various dairy operations are highly desirable.

The candidate must have excellent communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to effectively interact with stakeholders from academia, government, non-government organizations, communities, and industry.  The most competitive candidate is a critical thinker who is motivated and self-driven, with the aptitude and the enthusiasm to learn and apply scientific principles to real-world air quality problems.  Candidates with positive attitude, dedication, and desire to make original and sustained contributions to CARB will be highly regarded.

Experiences in field measurement campaigns are must.  Traveling, field work, analytical instrument handling, and system development experiences are also required for this position.  Technical understanding of analytical instrument maintenance and operation procedures will be emphasized.
