The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a full-time (100%) Assistant Research Physicist with an expected start date of August 2018.

Position Description:
The Assistant Research Physicist will perform research in upper atmospheric or ionospheric physics with emphasis towards modeling of the interaction of atmospheric waves within these regions. The successful candidate will be expected to conduct original research, likely utilizing data from the upcoming NASA Ionospheric Connection Explorer Mission (http://icon.ssl.berkeley.edu<http://icon.ssl.berkeley.edu/>) to resolve questions about the strong variability in Earth's space environment driven by forcing from below. ICON is a NASA Explorer mission, developed and managed by the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley with key support from several partner institutions. ICON will explore the boundary between Earth and space to understand the physical connection between our atmosphere and our space environment.

The Assistant Research Physicist will engage in independent and collaborative research with both SSL and outside personnel, attend and actively support scientific seminars, workshops, working team meetings and other venues for presentations of results and development of collaborative research relationships, pursue timely publication of research in peer-reviewed journals and pursue additional funding opportunities consistent with existing and future research programs and goals.

Assistant Research Physicist will:
* Lead efforts to analyze and interpret ICON scientific data to achieve the objectives of the mission, where prompt publication of results in journals of record is an evaluation criterion for professional advancement.
* Learn and understand ICON science operations processes and contribute to science operations and planning efforts.
* Support the efforts of ICON science team and the Science Data Center Lead in the implementation and update of analysis software at the ICON Science DataCenter.
* Coordinate efforts of the science operations planning & science team to maximize the scientific return of the mission.
* Train ICON personnel (students and post-docs) in the analysis of the ICONdataset.
* Contribute to project reports & reviews related to the ICON science data and data center.
* Participate in ICON science outreach efforts at Berkeley and around the state of California.

Basic Qualifications:
PhD or equivalent international degree required at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications (required by start date of the job):
* One or more years of postdoctoral experience in collection, calibration or analysis of data from scientific instrumentation in space or relevant environments.
* Record of research publications since PhD degree.

Preferred Qualifications:
* PhD in Physics, Astronomy, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science.
* Experience with upper atmosphere or space physics satellite data and ionosphere numerical models.
* Experience in software development and deployment in scientific data analysis pipelines.
* Prior experience applying for grants or contracts to support newprojects.
* Experience developing new projects including scientific instruments, hardware, or analysis tools.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary will be commensurate with experience.

Initial appointment will be for two years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and availability of funding.
