Postdoctoral Research Associate in Fluid-Fault Interaction, Hydrogeology
and/or Geomechanics
Department of Geological Sciences, San Diego State University
San Diego, California
The Dept. of Geological Sciences at San Diego State University seeks
applicants for a postdoctoral research associate with a disciplinary focus
in hydrogeology and/or mechanics. Research will involve computational
modeling and potentially some field work (depending on specific research
interests) to address research questions in a wide range of potential
research areas: fluid-fault interaction in natural and induced seismicity,
coupled geologic processes at the basin-scale, physics-based seismicity
forecasting, and simulation-optimization. The research associate will be
directly supervised by Prof. Matthew Weingarten, but will have the
opportunity to work in collaboration with colleagues in the Department as
well as faculty in SDSU’s Blue-Gold Area of Excellence (see Blue-Gold
below). Members of Prof. Weingarten's research group have access to
high-performance computing on campus through a variety of cluster and
LinuxSMP systems at the Computational Science Research Center (see CSRC).
Ideal candidates will have demonstrated the ability to produce independent
and creative research approaches in some aspect of hydrogeology, mechanics,
fluid-fault interaction, poroelasticity or optimization. A strong
background in hydrogeology or mechanics as well as numerical methods is
necessary. Competence in programming languages such as Python, C++ or
scripting languages such as MATLAB is desirable. Applicants must hold a PhD
in Earth Sciences, Geophysics, Civil Engineering, or a field with a related
skill set at the time of appointment.
The successful candidate will seek opportunities to engage undergraduate
and graduate students in research and mentoring as well as seek external
funding as appropriate. The associate may also be appointed as a Lecturer
to develop and/or teach a course on a subject in his/her expertise if so
desired and available. The initial appointment is a full-time (1.0 FTE),
12-month term, with the possibility of renewal contingent on satisfactory
progress in research. The preferred start date is Fall 2018 and salary will
be commensurate with experience.
Interested candidates should email a cover letter, full CV, and contact
information for 3 references to Matthew Weingarten (mweingarten at sdsu.edu).
The cover letter should state the candidate’s primary research interests
and how the position is a strong fit for the candidate’s research and
career goals. San Diego State University is committed to promoting a
community diverse in race, ethnicity, language, culture, social class,
national origin, religious and political belief, age, ability, gender,
gender identity and expression, and sexual orientation. For more
information, contact Matthew Weingarten at mweingarten at sdsu.edu.
Applications will be processed until position is filled, but those received
by June 1st, 2018 will receive full consideration.
