Duties and Responsibilities
1. The Hawai'i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology (HIGP), School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), University of Hawai'i at Manoa, seeks applications for a faculty member at the Assistant Researcher (R-3) level in planetary science and geology, with an emphasis for developing laser based technology for remote detection of chemicals, minerals, and biological materials.
2. Develop compact remote sensing instruments suitable for “search of life” mission for NASA and detection of hazardous materials for DOD applications using remote Raman, LIBS and fluorescence spectroscopies.
3. Conduct scientific research in the field of remote sensing of materials on geological sites and in ocean using active laser interrogation and detection.
4. Write proposals for future support; publish scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. Present results at appropriate conferences.
Minimum Qualifications
1. PhD. in the geosciences with a dissertation emphasis on remote Raman technology.
2. At least one year of post-doctoral training in planetary science.
3. Ability to communicate results to the planetary science community as demonstrated by peer reviewed publications, including first-authored publications.
4. Strong background in Raman spectroscopy including micro-Raman and remote Raman systems.
5. Must be able to develop new Raman systems with low mass, compact size, high throughput and high spectral resolution.
6. Significant experience in Raman, LIBS and fluorescence spectroscopies, optics, high power lasers, spectrometers
7. Strong oral and written communication skills.
8. Ability to program in MATLAB.
9. Experience in operation with high powered lasers and familiarity with laser safety.
Desirable Qualifications
1. Ability to perform independent research with sound critical thinking and proper scientific methods.
