Job Description

 

Communications Specialist I

 

This is a full-time position. This position will be posted until 4 pm on
November 17, 2017 or until a sufficient number of applications have been
received.  Thereafter, applications will be reviewed on an as-needed basis.

 

UCAR- President's Office- Communications

 

No relocation assistance is offered for this position.

 

U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or other protected status under 8
U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) is required for this position.  UCAR/NCAR will not
sponsor a work visa (e.g., J-1, H1-B, etc.) for this position.

 

Where You Will Work

Located in Boulder, Colorado, University Corporation for Atmospheric
Research (UCAR) serves and participates in a collaborative community of
researchers and educators who are dedicated to understanding the atmosphere
-- the air around us -- and the complex processes that make up the Earth
system, from the ocean floor to the Sun's core. We manage the National
Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) on behalf of the National Science
Foundation and the university community.

 

What You Will Do

The Communications Specialist provides the Communications Team with a wide
range of writing and editing support to help promote the National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and UCAR Community Programs (UCP) to general
audiences. In addition, the Communications Specialist works with the Manager
of Media Relations to provide media support.

 

Writing and editing

.        Ghostwrites clear, accurate and relevant corporate communications
and messages ensuring that all materials are written in an appropriate
manner for the audience in which they are intended. Materials include:
emails, speeches, talking points, presentations, fact sheets, brochures and
reports.

.        Plans audience-focused content, interviews subject matter experts,
and drafts content for the web and other channels about NCAR and UCP
research, education and services.

.        Drafts social media content with attention to accuracy, messaging,
and appropriateness.

.        Responds to copy reviews and iterations by subject matter experts
and colleagues in the Communications team to ensure clarity and accuracy.

.        Ensures all editorial content utilizes correct grammar, spelling,
punctuation and organizational style.

 

Media relations

.        Under direction of the Media Relations Manager conducts background
research into news outlets and reporters to help inform our news
distribution.

.        Uses Cision, Google, and other similar public relations tools to
monitor and create weekly news clip summary reports for organizational
leadership.

.        Escorts media personnel, including film crews, on UCAR/NCAR
property to conduct interviews or take photographs.

.        Responds to media inquiries working with the Media Relations
Manager to determine appropriate experts for interviews.

 

General

.        Provides communications support (staff emails, updates to emergency
information on the web) to the Facilities Group in the event of a closure or
delayed opening of our facilities (e.g. inclement weather).

 

What You Need

.        Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English or related
field, and at least two years writing and/or editing experience; or an
equivalent combination of education and experience.

.        Advanced ability and skill at writing for a wide range of audiences

.        Thorough knowledge of the English language, including punctuation,
spelling, syntax, and grammar

.        Demonstrated skill in copy editing and proof reading

.        Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop strong
working relationships with both technical and non-technical subject matter
experts, reporters, and colleagues

.        Skill at interviewing technical and non-technical subject matter
experts

.        Understanding of journalism/mass communication standards and
practices including digital and social media

.        Understanding of the news media and experience working with
journalists

.        Ability to meet deadlines and balance multiple tasks

.        Ability to interface and collaborate with peers at sister
institutions, professional societies, and federal agencies, and to work
internally with a variety of staff at all levels.

.        Interest in Earth system science

.        Ability to handle confidential and sensitive material with
discretion

.        Experience with MS Word, MS PowerPoint, Google Apps

 

Desired Skills

.        Knowledge of AP style

.        Knowledge of Drupal, Cision, MailChimp

.        Google Apps
