Two funded PhD positions are available in the newly-formed Severe Weather
and Climate group in Stanford's Earth System Science department. I am
seeking creative, hard-working students interested in fluid dynamics
questions related to storms and climate. Qualified students will have high
marks in math and physics classes, and independent research experience is
desirable. More information can be found at storms.stanford.edu.

Students will have the possibility of participating in a hurricane field
campaign if they choose to pursue hurricane-related questions, which is the
primary focus of my current research. Other possible topics include
heatwave and cold front dynamics, supercell/tornadogenesis, and severe
weather occurrence thresholds in a warming world, and students will have
considerable freedom to shape their own projects. Potential applicants are
encouraged to contact me in advance of applying (oneillm at stanford.edu).

Applications for Fall 2018 are currently open and due December 5th. Please
forward to possible candidates.
