A 2-year postdoctoral researcher position in land surface modeling is
available at Uni Research Climate in Bergen, Norway, with the
possibility of being extended.More experienced candidates can be
considered for a permanent researcher position. The focus will be to
improve our understandings on permafrost carbon climate feedbacks using
the coupled framework of the state-of-the-art Norwegian Earth System
Model (NorESM).
Main duties include;
1) Implementing and improving permafrost related processes within the
Community Land Model (CLM) for a more realistic representation of
permafrost.
2) Evaluation of the CLMpermafrost representation in close interaction
with field scientists, WRF modelers, and global Earth system modelers.

3)Working together withthe NorESM community to conduct simulations to
understand permafrost carbon climate feedbacks.
4) Maintain the CLM in the framework of NorESM for the CMIP6 simulations.
The model development will focus on biogeophysical side of permafrost;
some examples include subgrid representation of other permafrost
processes in the CLM, particularly on the landscape development in areas
with ice-rich ground, including thermokarst formation and ground
subsidence or snow permafrost feedback to ultimately understand the
effects of thawing permafrost on future climate.

*Requirements/qualifications:*

The successful candidate should have a PhD degree or the equivalent in
the discipline of either mathematics, physics, or geosciences with a
strong background in ESM particularly on the representation of surface
energy balance, snow cover, permafrost, hydrology, biogeochemistry,
and/or glacier mass balance. Furthermore, the candidate must present
evidence that she/he is capable of programming enough to modifying the
model source code to facilitate improvements of the model physics. The
candidate should have experience with Earth System Model structure,
particularly previous experience with CLM is most beneficial. The
candidate should further have experience with evaluation of model
results using field observations and have knowledge in high-latitude
environments.

The successful candidate should further demonstrate:

  *

Knowledge in ESM framework particularly land surface modeling

  *

Technical expertise in programming, in particular FORTRAN and NCL

  *

Evidence of creativity and capability of independent research

  *

Excellent writing and communication skills in English

  *

Collaborate with researchers in different discipline

**

*The application must include:*

  *

A 2-pg motivation letter including a statement of research interests

  *

CV (summarizing education, positions and academic work, and other
    qualifying activity)

  *

Copies of educational certificates and transcript of records*

  *

List of publications and/or awards and stipends that the applicant
wishes to be considered by the evaluation committee

  *

If available, a copy of the PhD thesis

  *

Names and contact details of 2-3 referees (name, relation to
    candidate, e-mail and telephone number)

*Foreign applicants are recommended to attach an explanation of their
University’s grading system.

*Please remember that all documents should either be in English or a
Scandinavian language.

*Salary and work environment:*

Salary is decided by agreement. Uni Research AS has an employee pension
and insurance agreement. The successful applicant must comply with the
guidelines that apply to the position.
