The Climate and Extreme Weather Laboratory
<http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~dchavas/> in the Department of Earth,
Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences <http://www.eaps.purdue.edu/> (EAPS) at
Purdue University has one funded PhD position available beginning in Fall
2018. Potential project topics include fundamental climate controls of
severe thunderstorms or hurricanes on Earth.

Society is vulnerable to a range of extreme weather phenomena (hurricanes,
tornadoes, etc.) and their associated hazards. Our group uses theory,
numerical modeling, and observations:

   1. to understand the underlying physics of these phenomena and their
   associated hazards; and
   2. to develop simple physics-based models for their representation in
   real-world risk applications

Purdue EAPS is a leader in the study of Earth’s atmosphere and is actively
developing a new research and teaching program in the area of extreme
weather and climate. Moreover, Purdue University boasts one of the best
collections of high-performance research computing systems in the country
maintained by a strong and active computing support staff to serve all your
computing needs.

If you are interested, please contact Dan Chavas <dchavas at purdue.edu> (
dchavas at purdue.edu). Students with strong backgrounds in physics/math are
particularly encouraged to apply.

Information about application requirements is available at:
https://www.eaps.purdue.edu/for_students/graduate/ . Final deadline for
applications is January 2, 2018, though discussion prior to this date is
welcome.
