*Job Summary*
The National Wind Technology Center is seeking an atmospheric scientist
to help lead a wind resource characterization research program focused
on development and application of new resource methodologies and
technologies for use by the wind industry. The program will include
examination of atmospheric processes over a range of scales from
mesoscale to microscale that influence wind energy systems using both
computational modeling and field deployed observational systems.
The successful candidate will primarily focus on wind, but will
collaborate with other NREL staff in the area of energy resource
characterization including wind, solar and water power to carry out
research and provide leadership in the following areas:
1) improvement and validation of the next generation models that bridge
the mesoscale and microscale for estimation of short and long term
energy production
2) maturation and quantification of resource and energy estimation
processes including uncertainty quantification
3) development of advanced resource databases that are used for a
variety of research studies
4) development and validation of atmospheric observation systems
including new remote sensing technologies.
This scientist is expected to demonstrate a broad understanding and wide
application of atmospheric principles, theories and concepts as well as
general knowledge of wind energy related disciplines and applications.
The scientist will be involved in strategic development of the wind
resource characterization program and work with a wide variety of
customers including the DOE energy technology programs. They will also
work collaboratively with other national laboratories, industry and the
international community to define important strategic directions and
execute wind related energy resource projects worldwide.
The successful candidate will have excellent writing, interpersonal and
communication skills. The candidate will be expected to publish results
in technical journals/conference proceedings and presenting work at
conferences, symposia, and review meetings. They will also be expected
to support and lead the development of new work proposals, preparations,
and reviews.

*Required Education, Experience, and Skills*
Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience or equivalent relevant
education/experience.
Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience or
equivalent relevant education/experience.
Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience or
equivalent relevant education/experience.
Applies extensive scientific technical expertise, and has full knowledge
of other related disciplines. Considered a technical resource.
Demonstrates leadership in several areas of team, task or project lead
responsibilities. Demonstrated experience in management of projects.
Excellent technical writing, interpersonal and communication skills.
.
*Preferred Qualifications*
The preferred candidate will have experience with atmospheric modeling
tools used for wind resource characterization by the wind industry e.g.
WRF, WAsP and TurbSim, and validation thereof. The preferred candidate
will have a strong expertise in atmospheric observational platforms and
data analysis techniques for tower based instrumentation and remote
sensing. The preferred candidate will be familiar with forecasting and
energy assessment processes (e.g., power curve modeling) used by
industry, including the data analysis and uncertainty processes.
Candidates with engineering backgrounds but strong knowledge of
atmospheric science are also encouraged to apply. Experience in leading
large projects will be an advantage.
.
*Submission Guidelines*
Please note that in order to be considered an applicant for any position
at NREL you must submit an application form for each position for which
you believe you are qualified. Applications are not kept on file for
future positions. Please include a cover letter and resume with each
position application.
