GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation of public
law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the
state of Schleswig-Holstein (10%) and is one of the internationally
leading institutions in the field of marine sciences. Currently GEOMAR
disposes over an annual budget of approx. 72 million Euro and has approx.
950 employees.
The research unit Magmatic and Hydrothermal Systems of the research
division Dynamics of the Ocean Floor is offering a position of
Post-doctoral research scientist for
Volcanology and tectonics of the seafloor
Job Description
We are seeking a team-orientated early-career individual with proven
initial publication ability and the potential to provide leadership, both
nationally and internationally, in studying volcanic and tectonic
processes on the seafloor. We are particularly interested in someone who
will use the best combination of geophysical and petrologic methods to
study the magmatic and tectonic processes which lead to the generation and
intraplate modification of the seafloor.
The Research Unit has access to an exceptional range of in-house
analytical (microprobe, LA-ICP-MS, TIMS, MC-ICP-MS, 40Ar/39Ar dating) and
deep sea exploration (6000 m-rated AUV and ROV, 3000 m-rated ROV, 400
m-rated submersible) equipment and is embedded in a Division that includes
expertise in petrology, fluid flow modelling, marine mineral resources,
and marine geodynamics.
Qualification
Completed PhD in Geology or related discipline
Proven publication ability in studies of seafloor volcanology and/or
tectonics
Willingness and capability to participate in multi-week research cruises
Demonstrated leadership and team-work qualities
Demonstrated experience in grant acquisition would be advantageous
The position is initially for 3 years with the possibility of a further 3
year extension based on a positive mid-term evaluation and conformity with
the WissZeitVG (law of limited-term employment of academics). The salary
depends on qualification and could be up to the class E13 TVöD-Bund of the
German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position and
cannot be split.
