Description:
The University of California, Merced is the newest and tenth campus of the
University of California system and the first American research university
built in the 21st century. With approximately 7,300 students, UC Merced has

approximately 25,000 students. With undergraduate, graduate, and PhD
programs, plans for a future medical school program, partnerships and

requiring talented, knowledgeable and dynamic educators, researchers,
management and staff.
University of California, Merced is currently searching for an experienced
individual familiar with isotope ratio mass spectrometry is sought for a
yearly contract position at the University of California Merced. The person
chosen for the position will be responsible for the operation and
maintenance of two gas source isotope ratio mass spectrometers including a
gas chromatographic system, an elemental analyzer, a carbonate analyzer,
and a thermo-chemolysis system. These instruments and the associated
laboratory will be operated as a recharge facility under the Office of
Research and Economic Development. The successful applicant will work with
graduate students, postdocs, and undergraduate students in a very active
research environment strongly linked to education. The successful applicant
will need to have 3+ years of hands on experience using stable isotope
instrumentation, experience supervising undergraduates, and a record of
understanding complex instrumentation. The successful applicant will assist
faculty and students in designing experiments and sampling schemes to best
utilize the power of stable-isotope techniques. She/he will also assist
faculty and staff in the analyses and interpretation of stable isotope
data. The stable isotope laboratory built in 2015 is located in the Science
and Engineering building on the main campus and is part of the Life and
Environmental Sciences academic unit (

the Southern Sierra Critical Zone Observatory, manages two UC Natural
Reserves, and is involved in the Environmental Systems and Quantitative
Systems Biology graduate programs.
Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in science in the fields of ecology,
chemistry, environmental science, or earth science is required.
• A Master’s or Ph.D.preferred.
• A minimum of at least 2-3 years of related experience required.
• Experience at data assurance and quality control in analytical
measurements preferred.
• Knowledge of and experience in the operation and maintenance of two gas
source isotope ratio mass spectrometers including a gas chromatographic
system, an elemental analyzer, a carbonate analyzer, and a
thermo-chemolysis system required.
• Solid leadership skills associated with planning work assignments,
establishing priorities and scheduling instructional space required.
• Solid interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working
relationships with students, faculty and staff required.
• Knowledge of data acquisition and analysis techniques required.
• Advanced knowledge of stable isotope chemistry research discipline or
instructional design to collaborate effectively with faculty and function
as a resource to research and instructional associates required.
• Strong abilities to conduct and report on scientific experiments and
findings required.
• Knowledge of necessary lab safety procedures & requirements & chemical
disposal guidelines required.
