Description of Work Unit 	

The Ecosystem Science & Sustainability Department is a teaching and 
research unit of Colorado State University. Faculty include ecologists, 
watershed scientists, and programmers that teach ecology and watershed 
science as well as conduct research on international and national issues 
of ecology and watershed science. The department is one of five academic 
departments in the Warner College of Natural Resources.

Position Summary 	

Project manager for aNASA-funded citizen science project on intermittent 
streams. Manager will organize workshops to recruit citizen scientists, 
develop and maintain citizen science database, install and maintain 
streamflow sensors, and assist withGISand remote sensing data collection 
and processing.

Required Job Qualifications 	

Bachelor’s degree in watershed science, geography, or similar area
Related field work experience
Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s 
license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.

Preferred Job Qualifications 	

Master’s degree in a related field
Experience with installing and maintaining streamflow sensors
Experience working withGPS
Skills with geospatial data processing including ArcGIS, watershed 
delineation, and Landsat data
Strong interpersonal skills
Strong written and oral communication skills

      Essential Duties

Job Duty Category 	Citizen science data portal
Duty/Responsibility 	

Assist with developing and maintaining data portal. Design online data 
entry site through CitSci.org. Evaluate user requests for participation, 
and approve sites uploaded by participants. Regularly check uploaded 
data for quality and train research assistants to aid with data quality 
checks. This is the second of three main portions of the project, which 
requires a data portal for citizen scientists to enter stream flow 
information.

Job Duty Category 	Sensor network maintenance
Duty/Responsibility 	

Coordinate installation and maintenance of stream flow sensors. Select 
new field locations for field sensors using geospatial analysis and 
field review. Order and prepare equipment for field installation. 
Organize field crews to conduct field visits for sensor installation and 
maintenance. Download data, check for quality, and archive data on 
network server. This is one of three main portions of the project, which 
requires a network of sensors to monitor stream stage.

Recruit participants and communicate with network. Organize annual 
workshop to recruit citizen scientists. Contact partners, select meeting 
venue, develop agenda, compile meeting materials. Contribute to writing 
newsletter articles and collecting photos and other images for 
newsletters. Identify partners for joining the network, and add these to 
an outreach list for newsletter distribution. Project success requires a 
large and engaged network of citizen scientists.

Duty/Responsibility 	

Keep database updated and organized. Checks data from sensors, remote 
sensing, and citizen scientists for quality. Archives raw data and 
quality-checked data in a server location. Writes metadata documents to 
describe each dataset. The database is the scientific resource being 
created through this project, and it must be well-maintained to be useable.
