PhD studentship in "How seasonal leaf dynamics in Amazonian forests affect their ability to withstand 21st century climate change” at the University of Exeter.

A fully-funded PhD opportunity is available for a motivated candidate with a numerical and/or physical science background to join a new research group in Climate and Vegetation at the University of Exeter. The PhD student will investigate the processes controlling seasonal leaf dynamics in the Amazon forest, and their role in the drought resilience of the forest. The student will gain key skills in measurements and modelling, working alongside experts at both the University of Exeter and the UK Met Office, with opportunities for international collaboration and field work in the Amazon. This project is one of three that are in competition for funding from the NERC Great Western Four+ Doctoral Training Partnership (GW4+ DTP). The GW4+ DTP consists of the Great Western Four alliance of the University of Bath, University of Bristol, Cardiff University and the University of Exeter plus six Research Organisation partners. The partnership aims to provide a broad training in earth and environmental sciences, designed to train tomorrow’s leaders in earth and environmental science. The Exeter Climate Systems group at the University of Exeter uses concepts from various branches of mathematics to help improve fundamental understanding and prediction of weather and climate and their interaction with society (http://emps.exeter.ac.uk/mathematics/research/xcs/).

The studentships will provide funding for a stipend of £14,553 per annum, research costs and UK/EU tuition fees at Research Council UK rates for 42 months (3.5 years) for full-time students, pro rata for part-time students.

You should have or expect to achieve at least a 2:1 Honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant field (e.g. Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Computer Science or Engineering, or Meteorology). Applicants with a Lower Second Class degree will be considered if they also have Master’s degree.
This studentship will be funded by NERC, and is only available to UK and EU nationals.  You must have resided in the UK for three years prior to starting the studentship to receive funding for tuition fees and a stipend. Candidates from outside the EU are not eligible for this studentship. Students from EU countries who do not meet the UK residency requirements may still be eligible for a fees-only award but no stipend. Applicants who are classed as International for tuition fee purposes are not eligible for funding.
