Position Summary 	

The Division of Business, Communication and the Environment program of 
Environmental Science and Policy at Southern Oregon University (SOU) is 
seeking candidates for a full-time, nine month, tenure track, Assistant 
Professor. The successful candidate will teach courses in 
cartography,GIS, Remote Sensing,GPS, and environmental data analysis, 
and may be called upon to help in delivery of lower and upper division 
courses in their specialties. Proven teaching ability and demonstrable 
research potential are essential; Ph.D./ABDin Environmental 
Studies/Sciences, Earth Science, Geoscience, Geography, or related 
discipline is required at the time of appointment. Successful candidates 
will maintain active scholarly research programs while contributing to 
the geospatial technology component of our undergraduate and graduate 
programs including Environmental Science & Policy, Environmental 
Education, Anthropology, Biology, and other programs.

The candidate should demonstrate competency in the use and application 
ofGISand geospatial technology to a broad range of environmental 
problems, and have experience incorporating such content into 
undergraduate or graduate level instruction curricula. Candidates should 
show excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational 
and management experience related to geospatial data, software licenses, 
and computers in a teaching computer lab and the ability to support 
varied student and faculty research initiatives in these area.

Minimum Qualifications 	

• Initial appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor requires a 
Ph.D/ABDin Environmental Studies/Sciences, Earth Science, Geoscience, 
Geography, or related discipline at the time of appointment from a 
university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education or an 
internationally recognized accrediting organization.
• Familiarity with ArcGIS Desktop and either Erdas orENVI.
• Familiarity with Global Positioning System use and integration 
inGISand Remote Sensing.
• Ability to teachGIS, Remote Sensing, and Data Analysis courses at the 
undergraduate and graduate levels.
• Demonstrated familiarity with managing software and licenses, 
computers, printers, and other peripheral equipment used in a geospatial 
computer lab.
• Demonstrated maintenance of an active scholarly research program.

Preferred Qualifications 	

• Experience teaching in higher education.
• Familiarity with ArcGIS Server/Online for publishing student and 
faculty data and maps.
• Demonstrated interest and ability in acquiring external funding for 
research.
• Demonstrated research and/or teaching in ecology and water resources.

Physical Demands 	

Regular teaching activities, including standing, sitting,and lecturing.
