The Department of Geosciences at Fort Lewis College invites applications
for a full-time tenure-track position in the field of Geographic
Information Sciences at the Assistant Professor level commencing in the
fall semester of 2017. Responsibilities include teaching GIS courses
within the Department of Geosciences and administration of the college's
GIS Certificate program.
*Required Qualifications*
* A completed Ph.D. by August 14, 2017 in Geography, Geographic
* Information Science, or a closely related discipline
* Experience using GIS software as applied to the physical and natural
sciences
* Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching
* Active engagement in research and scholarship involving
undergraduate students
* Ability to lead the college's growing GIS
* Certificate program. This involves experience with program
administration, working with undergraduate students on GIS-related
research projects, and overseeing student internships
* Proven commitment to teach and mentor students on interdisciplinary
topics, and take an active role in extra-curricular,
student-centered activities that broaden the undergraduate academic
experience
*Preferred Qualifications*
* A research focus on Remote Sensing, particularly as it is applied to
Geosciences

Teaching Responsibilities
*
* Teaching load is 24 credits per year of which three may be
authorized for research release GIS courses using ArcGIS software:
Intro-level (map design), intermediate-level (vector modeling), and
advanced-level (raster modeling)
* Supporting courses such as Remote Sensing, Computer
* Programming, and Web Mapping
*About the Department and the GIS Certificate Program*
The Department of Geosciences consists of six tenured or tenure-track
faculty and one lecturer, and all are committed to enthusiastic,
high-quality teaching, and are active in research, particularly with
undergraduates. The department offers a B.S. degree in Geology and a
Certificate in GIS. Both the Geology major and the GIS Certificate
program have seen substantial growth over the past several years. In
November 2016, Geosciences and GIS will move to the new Geology, Physics
and Engineering building. This $35-million, 60,000 ft2 academic building
will house state-of-the-art teaching and research spaces designed for
the particular needs of each program.
*About Fort Lewis College and Durango, Colorado*
Fort Lewis College is Colorado's public liberal arts college, with
approximately 3,800 students. Founded in 1911, the college moved to its
current location in 1956, and primarily serves Southwestern Colorado and
the greater Four Corners region, although the college enrolls students
from all 50 states and numerous foreign countries. The college's student
population is quite culturally diverse, and includes 24% Native American
and 11% Hispanic. The liberal arts mission of Fort Lewis College
emphasizes excellence in undergraduate teaching with members of the
Department of Geosciences contributing to an energetic and thriving
learning community. At an elevation of 6,872 ft., Fort Lewis College
overlooks Durango, Colorado, a small mountain city with a population of
about 18,000. Durango is famous not only for its rich and colorful
history, but also for its many outdoor activities including skiing,
mountain biking, rafting, and hiking.
