OCEAN MODELING SCIENTIST
An*ocean modeling Scientist*position with 12 month base salary support
is open in theClimate and Global Dynamics (CGD) Laboratory
<http://www2.cgd.ucar.edu/>of the National Center for Atmospheric
Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado. This position comes with
associated software engineering and project scientist support, as well
as a share of CGD administrative and computing resources. The specific
responsibilities associated with the position are: to conduct original,
independent and collaborative research in ocean model development with a
particular focus on computational methods and interfacing resolved scale
dynamics (ocean dynamical cores) with physical parameterizations across
a range of resolutions; to lead and facilitate collaborative research on
the incorporation of new ocean dynamical cores within theCommunity Earth
System Model (CESM) <http://www.cesm.ucar.edu/>framework; and to
communicate scientific results through both publications in scientific
journals and presentations at national and international scientific
meetings. These activities will address high-priority technical
requirements and are to be coordinated with ocean modeling partners, the
CESM Ocean Modeling Working Group (OMWG) and university contributors.
The successful candidate will work in collaboration with newly hired
Project Scientists and Software Engineers, and existing members of the
Oceanography Section of CGD to further these partnerships.
The successful candidate also will be expected to contribute to the CGD
mission "To discover the key processes in each component of the Earth's
climate system and to understand the interactions among them; to
represent this knowledge in community models that effectively utilize
computing advances; and to apply these models and observations to
scientific problems of societal relevance." To fulfill this mission, CGD
encourages and supports a triad of interdependent activities:
fundamental research into atmospheric and climate processes, community
model development, and the application of these models to research the
earth's climate system. CGD is the host center of the CESM, and
virtually all its activities and resources directly or indirectly
support CESM, either in the immediate or longer term. CGD scientists do
have the opportunity to develop an independent research program, within
the broad scope of these expectations and of the NCAR and CGD strategic
plans. Such research could be either collaborative or independent, but
should take advantage of and contribute to NCAR as a national center.
The position will be filled either at the Scientist I, or Scientist II
level, depending on experience and qualifications. NCAR Scientist I,
Scientist II, Scientist III and Senior Scientist positions are roughly
equivalent to university tenure track ranks of Assistant Professor,
Associate Professor, Associate Professor with tenure and full Professor,
respectively. Promotion from either Scientist I, or II, is expected
sometime within a 5 year term, pending a successful review of scientific
productivity and innovation, contributions to CGD and NCAR programs,
community service, and emerging scientific leadership.

A Ph.D or equivalent experience in physical oceanography or related
science or engineering is required. Applicants are requested to supply a
cover letter, a statement of research interests and how they might
contribute to the CGD mission and strategic plan, a current CV and the
names of four potential references. Consideration of applications will
begin*Monday, November 14*.
CGD is a laboratory of NCAR, a Federally Funded Research and Development
Center (FFRDC) of the National Science Foundation. NCAR is an
Affirmative Action, Equal Opportunity Employer. Women and minorities are
encouraged to apply. Further information about NCAR, CGD, the CGD
Strategic Plan, and CESM can be found at (http://www2.cgd.ucar.edu
