*Job Summary*
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL), located at the foothills
of the Rocky Mountains in Golden, Colorado, is the nation’s primary
laboratory for research and development of renewable energy and energy
efficiency technologies. NREL has a Wind Farm Modeling Initiative within
the National Wind Technology Center to enable advanced engineering
modeling of wind turbines and plants. This R&D program has an opening
for one graduate engineering intern in wake model development. The
engineering intern will work with the wind plant modeling team on the
development and testing/verification/validation of turbine wake models
including comparisons with high performance computing simulations and
validation data. Additionally, work on general testing and verification
of software codes will be involved.
The graduate engineering intern will assist model engineering leads in
the development and testing/verification/validation of turbine wake
models within the OpenFAST framework. The intern will work on executing
high fidelity models of wakes and atmospheric boundary layer in order to
verify and validate the engineering models. In parallel, a data
gathering and database development effort will be pursued for turbine
wake model validation. The intern will support the database development
and subsequently, the database data will be used to help validate
physical wake models. Additional work will be undertaken to help test
and verify the model software framework implementations and to assist in
the documentation of the models.
The position requires a Master’s Degree in a Mechanical or Related
Engineering Degree program. Additional required skills include
experience with Python programming language and computational fluid
dynamics tools.
The preferred candidate will have previous experience with Fortran
programming language, Matlab, the generalized dynamic wake model and
NREL’s SOWFA tool. General knowledge of wind turbine wake creation and
propagation is also preferred.
.
*Required Education, Experience, and Skills*
Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree granting program, or
graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution.
Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a
