Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher position at the
University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science Appalachian
Laboratory (UMCES-AL), working with Professor Xin Zhang
<http://www.greeningxin.com/>. The post-doc will work closely with the PI
on a research project regarding the Phosphorus (P) management in crop
production. The project will investigate the historical record of national
P budgets in crop production around the world, identify the major
socioeconomic and ecological drivers for the P fertilizer use and P Use
Efficiency (PUE), and consequentially provide recommendations for improving
PUE from farm to global scale.
*Responsibilities:*
1. Become familiar with the literature and database related to the
global P cycle and P management in crop production.
2. Synthesize and analyze data based on methodologies used in Zhang, X.
et al. (2015, Managing nitrogen for sustainable development, *Nature* 528,
51-59)
3. Work closely with the PI to synthesize research findings and to write
manuscripts for publication.
4. Present research findings at scientific meetings.
*Qualifications: *A Ph.D. in biogeochemistry, environmental science and
policy, or a closely related field is required. The successful candidate
will have a working knowledge of Nitrogen and Phosphorus cycling processes
in terrestrial ecosystems, strong quantitative skills, and proficiency in
at least one basic programming language (e.g. Matlab, R). Experience with
Industrial Ecology and Econometrics is desirable but not required.
Excellent writing and communication skills are essential.
The position will be based at the Appalachian Laboratory in Frostburg, MD.
Frostburg is a small college town in the mountains of western Maryland. The
area provides a great quality of life and abundant outdoor recreation
opportunities. The major metro areas of Washington D.C., Baltimore, and
Pittsburgh are all within a 2.5 hour drive.
*Start Date:* Review of applications will begin immediately and continue
until a qualified candidate is found. Start date is negotiable, but
preferably by spring 2017. The position is funded for 1.5 years with a
possibility of renewal. Salary is $47,500.00 per year and includes health
and retirement benefits.
